We made the paper, w00t! I typed it up and changed my classmates names, but here's the story...
S.H. Seniors Protest Grad Ceremony Changes
SWEET HOME- Seniors at Sweet Home High School were protesting this morning following a last-minute decision to hold tonight's graduation ceremony inside because of threat of rain, a decision that linits the number of spectators.
Seniors Bella Harris a Kyla Smith contacted the Democrat-Herald to explain the situation.
Both girls said they had invited several out-of-town family members and friends to attend tongiht's ceremony but learned this morning they would get only five tickets each.
"We're all protesting because we want it outside. It's been outside in the rain for years and years and years. It's Oregon," Harris said.
Smith said students were protesting because of the lack of notice.
"I've got a really big family, and there's not even enough room to fit my parents and my siblings with the five tickets that we have," she said. "All these people, and they won't be able to come."
Several parents also came down to complain, Harris said, "but nobody is listening."
Seniors were to be out of class today to practice for the ceremony. Classes are still in session for freshmen, sophomores and juniors.
Lynn Stauffer, administrative assistant to Superintendent Larry Horton, confirmed the situation with a call from Horton, who was at the high school.
"The decision was made (this morning) to hold the ceremony inside, and it was made due to the weather," she said. "Yes,there there kids who were not happy."
She added that while Sweet Home has held out-door ceremonies in the rain in the past, it has also held them inside.
-----------
The Truth: Only 5 out of the last 25 years has it been inside, and that was with notice ahead in time, not the morning of. Also, not 'some kids' were upset. 90% of us were raging pissed , went to the main office and started screaming at the Principal and Vice Principal. It was stupid because I had to tell all of my relatives from Washington that they couldn't come and some of my relatives here in Oregon.
I dunno.
Just thought it was cool that our little protest of 156 students made the county paper.
