I know it sounds odd, but chew on something. It'll hurt initially, but it helps to get your teeth moving where they're supposed to. Obviously avoid gum and caramel, other gooey things, but anything else that takes some chewing is good. My friend's orthodontist actually made these little plastic mouth-shaped discs that he gave his patients, and they were flavored like various things, and you were supposed to chew on it to ease the pain. Avoid grinding your teeth, make sure you're actually chewing on something, but just try to eat normal foods instead of Jell-O and milkshakes. Crunchy things could be painful, but the more chewing you do, the sooner the pain will go away. Start with something like pb&j, and work up to more solid foods. Taking some ibuprofin should help a little too. Every time you get your braces tightened expect pain for 2 or 3 days (probably worst on the second day). Good luck!

I had braces [as you already know], but yeah, I agree with the drink cold water thing. And if they really hurt, take something like advil, it will work eventually and your mouth won't hurt as much. With drinking cold water, it may hurt at first, but eventually it will feel better. Braces aren't the end of the world, they may be bothersome, but remember, at least they're not permanent.

Yayy, someone agrees with me. I also thought that if you have your mind on something else, like TV, you don't feel the pain as much. So try to watch something and go to sleep watching it so you dont have the inevitable problem of trying to go to sleep in pain.

I had a lot of pain the day after I got mine put on. It was 3 and a half years ago too. It felt weird having all that metal in there, and poking into my gums. It feels like someone is pulling your teeth and pushing them, and they aren't really supposed to move that way. Just try to eat something other than Jello. Jessi is right, yet again. =]
Mine don't hurt anymore, not even when they are tightened, unless there is a wire poking. Once you are okay with pb&j, you could try something like a cracker. I would suggest Ritz or Saltines, they are easiest to chew.

Mine hurt for quite a while after I got them, so it could be a while. I ate a lot of soup during those days though, so eating nothing hard helped me.
If you have to you can take ibuprofin, it helps some, and if you make sure not to move your mouth around too much and not knock it, I find after a while you can stop noticing the pain.

I still have them :(
I brake all the rules and my braces only hurt for a couple days.
Nothing has ever broken, or ever gotten damaged and i eat everything on the do not eat list....So.... Ya :D
It shouldn't hurt for too long, if it does try eating softer things :)

Most people get braces in their teens if they can afford it
Most people at my school have braces or just got them off... like 70% or more

^^ Even though insurance usually covers it, braces usually cost more than the full insurance coverage, thus it still costs quite a bit of money... And then there are those without insurance...

Okay... I get mine free. On NHS..... Lol. Im glad i dont have to pay.

Not everyone- Insurance doesn't always pay for it
Mine cost A LOT and my parents had to pay for a bit of mine and a bit of my brothers, so... Ya some people don't even have insurance, and without that i think its over a thousand dollars
Never mind lol U_N took my words

Lol. I dnt actually need them that much. My teeth r a little bit wonky an a tiny bit crowded (my adult tooth wouldnt have come down fully, which would have been okay). Loads of people have them, like prob about 60 people out of 800 in my skl, but only 1 person i no had 2 pay.

We switched health insurance while I had mine on, so it screwed up how it was being paid for. Our old health insurance paid for them in full, and then when we switched they even paid for more of them. Our health insurance only pays 80% of them. But now my parents have finished paying them off. =]

^^^
Not a lot of people have dental insurance that covers braces.
Where I live, my mom works for the province and she only gets an 90% coverage.. so she still has to pay 600 dollars around. Still very pricey.
Anyway..
Take a few Tylenols or Ibuprofen and try to chill! It will go away in a few days.
Then your teeth will feel loose, but it's normal and necessary!
There isn't much you can do to make the pain go away.. sleeping usually passes time.
good luckk
