Should Cigarettes be Illegal?
I have smoked cigarettes since I was a young boy. At eleven years old, my
brother and I sat in the back room at my Aunts house in Caddo Gap
Arkansas, and smoked some cigarettes we had stolen from her pack. I don’t
think it was my brother’s first time smoking, because he took bigger hits,
but I don’t think he had been at it for long.
After that, I stole butts out of the ashtrays at home and didn’t much exceed
simple scavengry (such a fine creation . . . scavengry) until fourteen. Once I
moved out of the house, just before my sixteenth birthday, I started smoking
much more, near a pack a day. For a time, I exceeded a pack a day, but
realizing how terrible my health was and could become, I abstained for a
week or so, before slowing climbing back to nearly the same rate as before.
My point is. I wish I had never started. I have come to the conclusion that
cigarettes should be illegal. Consider the obvious: Trans Fats, Asbestos,
lead paint; all are detrimental to your health. They will kill you or make you
ill in time. Tobacco is detrimental to your health. It contains many
carcinogens and will, after prolonged exposure, cause cancer. Why then is it
not illegal?
When a product is harmful, it has a warning label which reads (DON’T
FUCKIN TOUCH IT!!). Cigarettes are inhaled, chewing tobacco stuffed in
the mouth. This isn’t healthy, quite the opposite, really.
Not to mention the addiction. They say it’s harder to kick nicotine
then it is to quit heroin. I CAN’T QUIT. It’s quite awful to even try. I
need to be locked in a cage for a month, and even then, once I’m out
. . . I might . . .

Cigarettes are definitely bad for your health but I don't think making it illegal is the answer. The drug war has failed miserably and I don't think this would be any better. This is (supposed to be) a free society and choices we make we have to live with. The government isn't going to make you more health conscious by making it illegal. It was illegal for you as a minor to smoke cigarettes but you still did and making them illegal won't eliminate them from being accessible.

I don't actually think they should be illegal, its not the governments job to make us better people; we should be able to make our own choices. But given the way the government is run now, you would think they would be.

I do think that since weed is illegal (in the US), cigarettes should definitely be illegal. I think tobacco is worse than weed.

I think it should be illegal. There are illegal drugs that aren't nearly as bad as cigarettes.
Not only that, but i recently wrote a paper on secondhand smoke, which hurts so many other people. I post a few facts-
49,400 people die each year from second hand smoke. (They have never smoked a cigarette, but they died from other people smoking near them)
Just fifteen states out of 50, 30% of the whole country, have smoking banned in public places. That means that each year 35 states, or 70% of the U.S., have underweight babies, lung disease and thousands of people dying just from ETS (Environmental Tobacco Smoke).
Whenever you breathe in cigarette smoke, you’re breathing in 4,000 chemicals, 40 of them known carcinogens, substances that are proved to promote cancer. Nicotine is also in ETS, and nicotine increases heart rate and blood pressure.
ETS has caused 150,000-300,000 lung infections to children under the age of 18 months. It has increased the severity of asthma attacks in 200,000 to 1,000,000 people who have asthma.
I just copy-pasted this out of my written paper kind of randomly, so sorry if some don't make sense, i tried to make them work without the full story lol
[Edit: Forgot to mention- This data is for the US]

If not illegal then very expensive to where Ben wouldn't buy them. Hehe.
Knowing him, he still would though!

No, its up to the buyer to take full responsibility to be cautious about their health. But, there should be more restrictions on where and when you can smoke. I was reading in a magazine (Popular Science) that tobacco smoke decreases global warming because the smoke blocks the UV rays from warming up the Earth too much.

^^ Thats like saying its a buyers responsibility to not smoke cocaine, yet it was abused and it's now illegal. Smoking is over abused and its legal.
Popular science is full of crap if thats what it says.

They should be taxed far more heavily, problem solved. If you smoke cigarettes you're paying for your medical care and lack of productivity when they eventually cause you problems.

Of course they should be illegal. All they do is kill you, and people go around everywhere smoking them and hurting everyone by their second-hand smoke. Cigarettes are the most stupid thing ever invented.

Umm I do not think they should be illegal HOWEVER I think that people should be barred from smoking in ALL public places (enclosed) and 10 feet from public doors throughout the whole country.

Cigarettes are proven to have ALMOST as bad of a health affect as marijuana. I can't cite that, sorry. But I do believe it is a person's choice to kill themselves or not. So, I dont think the government has a right to step in. Though with narcotics, they are a danger to the person using and those around them while the smoker only kills their own lungs. Second hand smoke should not be tolerated though. Its disgusting and worse than straight up smoking.

More like much worse, but that's a different topic.
No drug should be made entirely illegal. It's a waste of resources to fight it. If someone wants to do drugs they will. It should be illegal in public and heavily taxed, though. Advertising should also be illegal.

I agree that advertising should be illegal. Good point.
But when you said no drugs should be illegal, I highly disagree since hard drugslike pot crack, and injection drugs can not only harm the user, but people involved with them. While cigarettes mainly hurt the user and only hurt the other people if they are around.
I say it should be illegal in confined spaces and public places. I feel sick when I see a mother smoking with the windows up with her children in the car. It is messed up.

Yes, but has "hard drugs" being illegal eliminated their usage or only obscured them and cost the justice system billions? There should be very heavy restrictions, but you can't stop people from doing drugs. It would be a wiser investment to better the society people live in rather than punish drug abusers. Happy people are less likely to resort to drugs.

I believe ciggarettes should be taxed so heavily that the buyer will be contributing their money for their healthcare. Maybe lower the taxes for everyone else. Hard drugs like pot? are you actually serious? To even classify marijuana with drugs like crack and injection drugs like heroin totally proves your ignorance and thus ruins any credibility you may have.

I don't see tobacco prohibition working out any better than alcohol prohibition. I do think that marijuana being a gross misdemeanor, while tobacco is totally legal, is hypocritical. I suspect the legalization of most drugs, though, even if I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole.

I think they should legalize ketamine... J/k... I agree with the majority of you in that they should heavily tax cigarettes, but not necessarily make them illegal... Limiting or even completely banning advertising of cigarettes isn't a bad idea either. And yeah, cigarettes ARE worse than marijuana... But you also have to realize, that maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to legalize "softer" drugs, like in Amsterdam.

Sorry this concept is all but intelligent for me.. I have not once in my life met somebody who ''KILLED THEMSELVES WITH SMOKING'' sure I've met people who could be better but damn I've seen old men who have smoked and drinked their whole lives and who can beat most 30 year old men at many things xD
I agree with everything except the excessive banning & banning advertisement. I really think the banning is a b***h but since I don't smoke IDC.
However making advertisements illegal is pretty much the same as making it illegal, it creates that ''mystery'' for simple minded people to hook up on

Wow. I think that taxes would be a good idea. Just like gas people really want to find alternative means. If we make cigs $5 dollars a pack then people will start to quit. It is kinda simple.
For instance, people smoking is bad. That is a giving fact people die from it but nowadays it seems like the only way to get people to stop doing things is to make it hard for them to access. Gas. People are finding new ways to get around that high price. If we did that to cigs we would basically save people.
Where would this money go? As said above into the healthcare system. If we had a universal healthcare system that would be a great area to pump that money into. That means that we can use our other tax money to go ahead and do other projects like...reparing bridges...
So there are many possibilities. It is just a matter of unlocking them.

Cigarettes are over 5 dollars a pack. They should be more around 10. That would help.

June 2nd, 2008, 08:43 PM
Haha. Sorry, as you can tell I am not a smoker and don't really pay attention to it. So yes, $10 a pack.
Now the issue arises like this. How would we get the american people to go along with this? How do we get the price up to there?

I disagree-
Every single smoker i know would never have started if it was illegal in the first place, and wouldn't brake the law to get smokes, so they would stop, and NOT kill themselves. If it's illegal it deters a lot of people, because some people just do it as a habit or relaxation tool or whatever.

They wouldn't have started if there were better health education, no advertisements, smoking were illegal in public nationwide, and cigarettes were three or four times the price they are now. I doubt most of your friends are of legal age or were when they started, anyway. Also, it really doesn't matter to the country if they're killing themselves as long as they're paying their own medical bill with obscene tobacco taxes. If people want to do something, let them; as long as there are regulations that prevent them from harming others it's their right.

.. I have not once in my life met somebody who ''KILLED THEMSELVES WITH SMOKING''...
Thats because they are dead.
400000 deaths every year are directly contributable to smoking in the US alone. Whats that? 4% of the worlds population, and not even close to the top amount of smokers
Now that doesn't mean when someone has a heart attack and they smoked a cigarette when they were 18 and they were 98 and their family history was full of heart disease.
That means that people who's deaths were CAUSED by smoking
Lung cancer that was triggered by smoking
Heart disease that is cause from years of smoking
And so many more things that people die from

I don't think 400,000 people die of cigarette smoke a year in the United States. A lot of the time, When people smoke and they die of heart disease or stroke or cancer, its put down that the cause of there death was smoking. There horrible lifestyle is generally not considered. I think it's much lower, though I couldn't say, not knowing.
Its not to say there not bad though. They suck. I wish they were illegal, but I don't think they should be illegal. catch 22?

I read that same issue. What you failed to mention is that popular science also said that it was very negligible, and the negative effects of cigarettes far, far, far, FAR outweigh the almost negligible effects of cigarette smoke on global warming.

Cigarettes are over 5 dollars a pack. They should be more around 10. That would help.
Around here a pack of Marlboro menthol lights are 3 dollars and change, cheaper than gas.

A list of harmful chemicals in cigarettes would be more useful. Chemicals aren't inherently bad, otherwise anything you consume would be toxic.

coffee has thousands. Everything we consume has thousands. We are made of thousands upon thousands of chemicals. what matters is what kind of chemicals.
Cigarettes should not be illegal. Substances in general should not be illegal, except weaponized substances.
Drug, tobacco, and alcohol education needs to be revamped. More emphasis on the negative effects of alcohol and tobacco, because there isnt enough of that. And more informed less biased info on other drugs. Just look at what they do in the netherlands.

duh! Some people are idiots and make bad choices like smoking, so for their own good, smoking should not be an option for them or for anyone.

They suck. I wish they were illegal, but I don't think they should be illegal. catch 22?
From http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/factsheets/cig_smoking_mort.htm
Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Each year, more than 400,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking. In fact, one in every five deaths in the United States is smoking related.
From http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4545
Cigarette smoking is the most important preventable cause of premature death in the United States. It accounts for nearly 440,000 of the more than 2.4 million annual deaths.
From http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_2X_Cigarette_Smoking.asp
Each year about 438,000 people in the United States die from illnesses related to cigarette smoking. Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined.
From http://www.emedicinehealth.com/cigarette_smoking/article_em.htm
Every year, roughly 430,000 Americans die from illnesses caused by tobacco use, accounting for one fifth of all deaths.
Just search google for deaths from cigarette smoking.
Are you saying each one of these site are wrong?
I'm going to ignore you.. Because you did that percentage thing...
What was the point of your post? How did that help the debate at all? If you don't have anything nice [or helpful] to say don't say anything at all.

Ever heard of something called freedom?
I agree, people make stupid choices all the time, and thats part of freedom
The problem i have with smoking is that in public it endangers others who are making the smart choices
Smoking in public is like drunk driving.
You have the choice to drink, but then since it endangers other people who are doing the right thing, driving while drunk is illegal.

i dont think it should be made illigal because that just means thugs will make the cash instead of the gov
but i also don't agree with my tax dollars paying for some retards hospital bill because he decided to smoke because its coooool
then refused to stop when u know it kills you
we spend billions on smokers every yr

Nothing really I was just letting you know that I am going to ignore you because you said this: '' 400000 deaths every year are directly contributable to smoking in the US alone. Whats that? 4% of the worlds population, and not even ''
Its a simple mistake. But since you act so high and mighty.....
Anyway yes tax the fuck out is a great plan, I don't think anything should be banned more.. They already banned smoking in public practically everywhere on the planet.
And yes if you make it illegal there will just be more illegal cigarettes, which is logical... Look at the dry law :P

Tobacco are definitely bad for your wellness but I don't think creating it unlawful is the response. The medication war has unsuccessful terribly and I don't think this would be any better. This is (supposed to be) a 100 % free community and options we create we have to stay with.
