TOKYO - A homeless woman who sneaked into a man's house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing.
Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man's closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday.
The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.
One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed.
"We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide," Itakura said. "When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side."
The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man's house about a year ago when he left it unlocked.
She had moved a mattress into the small closet space and even took showers, Itakura said, calling the woman "neat and clean."

No kidding. I'm surprised that they didn't notice her for the long time.

I read about this yesterday. That's crazy how she managed to live there for so long. You'd think that she would have accidentally made sounds that might attract attention, like snoring, sneezing, coughing, rolling over into the closet door while asleep.

wow i would so give her a job....she could be the maid, cook w/e to give her some cash flow so she could save up
but seriously living there for over a year very clean never took any of his stuff except some food
if that happened to me that lady could so stay as long as she wanted...i'd try and find her a better spot or atleast make it more comfy

i love how nobody's paying attention to the fact that shes 58 and had NOWHERE to go
she was so desperate she lived in a tight corner of a closet for an entire year hiding from the apartment owner
not knowing what would happen if he stumbled upon her
constantly trying to stay quiet and hidden
at 58
crammed in there for hours and hours at a go (she probly has arthritis er something at that age)
having to time your bathroom breaks
when u could eat
how little you had to eat
etc...

well she definatly deserved to get arrested. You cant just go into someones house and live there, homeless or not.

That's amazing. Reminds me of this guy who lived in the mall for like 5 years. He found a space between the walls, just a room-sized gap where there was nothing (bad planning when they built it I guess, you usually don't end up with a walled-off and unnecessary room), and he moved in. He brought in furniture and everything, and no one noticed for years. It's amazing the places people find to live in when they don't have anywhere else to go.
