View Full Version : Are you selfish on the net?

Web users are getting more ruthless and selfish when they go online, reveals research.

The annual report into web habits by usability guru Jakob Nielsen shows people are becoming much less patient when they go online.

Instead of dawdling on websites many users want simply to reach a site quickly, complete a task and leave.

Now, when people go online they know what they want and how to do it, he said.

People want sites to get to the point, they have very little patience," he said.

Web users were also getting very frustrated with all the extras, such as widgets and applications, being added to sites to make them more friendly.

Such extras are only serving to make pages take longer to load, said Dr Nielsen.

"Basically search engines rule the web," he said.

In the long run anyone who wants to beat Google just has to make a better search," said Dr Nielsen.

Yeah, it doesn't seem too selfish to me either. I don't get impatient with the internet, like if a page is slow to load (my old computer was a piece of crap, it took ten to twenty minutes from the time I logged in to my desktop for me to be able to click anything and expect it to go somewhere, so even after 5 months I'm still amazed at how zippy my laptop is), but I do expect to be able to find what I want or something that will work just as well. Widgets aren't bad, but if they're unnecessary and slowing things down, I would rather they not be there.

I get it they mean they are only looking for information but they aren't contributing to the internet with information that they know(I think). I'm not selfish though.

It's selfish not to contribute? So, it's selfish to buy food but not grow any for others? Or to rent books from the library but not donate your own books to used bookstores? xP

Joking aside, that does confuse me. I sort of thought that the point of the internet was to make information available to anyone with internet access. If you have something to contribute, you can, but not everyone has much to say that's worth dedicating a webpage to, nor do many people in the older generations know how to (like my grandparents, who can e-mail and google and all that, but would have issues learning to use myspace, or livejournal, or something of the like, let alone to create their own site). Is that so selfish?
