This isn't really a problem, I just need advice for it. I didn't know where to put it, so =\. Um, as summer is about to start, a lot of guys are going out for freshman football. I haven't played since um, 5th grade. I'm kind of slow, and I weigh regular. I'm starting to work out this summer.

I like football, don't get me wrong, but it seems like I'd be left out if a lot of my guy friends went out, and I didn't. I don't know my talents, and I'm finding out a lot about who I am. What should I do? (And if someone would know, what is the average bench/squat bar weight for a 14 year old?)

I think this would be more suitable in sports.

I'm a little confused by the words in your question - but I will try my best.

Maybe you should try and get a group of people together to go the gym and work-out. Not only will this physically strengthen you, but it will give you some social points. Also, if your school has some kind of speed and strength activity over the summer, go for that. Or any kind of strength/football camp. These will all help you.

Yeah, I just feel kind of bad that I'm asking these kind of questions. I feel kind of stupid and ignorant, because I know I'm better than this. You know? But, I'm getting better. =)

Thomas, I think part of your journey is finding these things out about yourself, to put yourself in different situations and see how they are for you. This presents yet another opportunity for you!

So, if you want to, try out and see what happens. Start working out, you know what's 'normal' for your age based on how you feel doing it. When it hurts, it means you've gone too far. Don;t make it a challenge or competition. It's for the enjoyment of the sport you're doing it, not to prove somehing to yourself or others.

Don't get discouraged, set reasonable goals for yourself, and see how it works out. If it doesn't, you can still be friends, it's based on more than your shared participation of football.

play football with your guy friends if you want to! it's fun, rough, and you'll learn good life skills (dedication, self discipline, self respect, team work).

when i was 14, i couldn't bench of squat much.

err... iif you've never worked out before... a rough guess would be:

bench: 90 lbs
squat: 100+ lbs

this is just a guesstimate, if you can do more then that's great!

It depends on your build.

For me, I couldn't lift much. But, I was just starting out.

When I finished freshman year, I was maxing my bench at 215lbs and maxing my sqaut at 435lbs.

But, I am a big dude and my thighs and calves (calfs?) are huge.

I obviously played line, and played it well I thought :P

I quit after my sophmore year, wanting to focus more on academics which I felt I had a much better chance of getting a scholarship through.

High School football requires alot of dedication, sometimes at the expensive of other things like your social life :P

Oh, and the biggest thing to remember is to have fun. One thing I found myself doing during the last two seasons was I wasn't playing for me, but I was playing for my coaches and parents. I wasn't having all that much fun, but I didn't want to let any of them down. If you remember that football is a game and not a job, it will be so much more enjoyable for you in the long run. I wasn't having fun and I got burned out by it.

P.S. I am so sorry, I just realised I brought up a month old thread.

I think it would be a good idea to try out. I played football in junior high and my freshman year. I quit after two two-a-days my sophomore year. I've regretted that decision ever since. So, if you enjoy it, try out. If you are in a small school, it doesn't really matter if you are that talented or not, you will get to play some anyway. If you are in a big school, then you might not get a chance to play if you aren't good enough, but it is still a good thing to do.

I don't know the average bench/squat weight of a 14 year old. When I was 14ish, I couldn't bench very much. I could only do about 130ish. I could squat about 280ish. Other people my age back then could bench about 160-180, and nobody really squatted too much. My friend and I got into a competition to see who could squat the most in 8th grade and I maxed out at 285 I think and he got 290 and he is smaller than I am. I could have done more with my leg strength because my thighs and calves are huge, but my back is bad.

The Squat is probably one of the most important lifts for a football player to do. If done correctly, you work not only your legs, but also your upper chest/shoulder region.

not just for football, everything. The squat is hands down the most effective (and painful) excersise you can do.

The squat is a wonderful exercise to do, but make sure you don't over-do it. Be careful and start out light and so you don't hurt yourself. Also, if there is some kind of strength and conditioning at your school for the football team during the summer, you should go so you can get a head start on the football season. You could check to see if there are any football camps available for you this summer as well.
