HP FTW!

All of them are nice, and Bryan's suggestion is probably best for what you're looking for. It's an all around winner.

VIAO`s Rock... but they tend to be pricey, HP is nice, but remember to do some research before making a commitment, it is ok to pay a little extra for a good laptop then paying a little for a crappy one.

VAIO from Sony have a really good looking but for what I know from them are that are very expensive and that you have some problems with them.

And HP are good ones but no the best are the more cheaper and good ones are more economic.

Browse through the circulars of Circuit City, Best Buy, Office Depot, and Staples. You might find something you like. I like HP/Compaq, Dell, and Acer. Some credit cards also double the manufacturer warranty. Once the manufacturer warranty goes out, the card warranty kicks in, and you contact the card issuer for reimbursement for repair costs. Of course, make sure your parents' credit card has this benefit and under what terms.

Avoid Toshiba. I have one, and it was poorly assembled. There's some weak plastic that makes popping sounds when some light pressure is applied over the card slots. The sound volume spikes sometimes when I slowly turn the dial higher. I've had 2 warranty repairs for the motherboard. My USB ports once suddenly stopped being able to recognize new plug and play devices.

That sounds like something that would only have a DVD/CD-RW drive, low memory, and Vista Home Basic. I would look for something that can burn DVDs also (more storage space on DVD +/- RWs than CD-RWs), 2 GB, and Vista Home Premium (although personally, I'm holding out for Windows 7 as I can't stand Vista).

I'm also taking a gamble on Windows 7 being better than Windows Vista. Sure hope it is...
