Hey guys

I was watching this guy on tv, Darren Brown or something.
He voiced this theory, that as children we develop this negative curiosity (I think thats what it was I can't remember), how if your like 5, and told 'not to open this box' (say theres a box on the table). You will almost definatley as a child, want to open that box right?

So I think, to some extent, that maybe the same can be applie to cutters?
If someone tells you NOT to do it, you want to do it, because of this negativity.
Which is why people tell you to think positive, maybe it eradicates this negative curiosity or something??

I don't know, I just wondered what you guys thought on this subject.
I think it has some meaning to it, because I'm like it sometimes, my boyfriend or best friend will tell me not to do it, and I'll want too, even though I know its a bad idea. But I have resisted the temptation, 1 year 9 months so far.

The theory makes some sense. There's also kind of a rush from doing something negative.

PS: 1 year and 9 months is amazing! Good job!

must agree here

we aren't six.

actually, getting a reminder helps me -- and i'll bet others agree -- stay on track
and NOT give in.

interesting theory, but it doesn't quite apply....apples/oranges

I have to agree with this. The theory makes alot of sense.

That is not a theory but a rule that applies to everything..

But there are always multiple things at work the ''don't do it!'' thing works in your sub-conscious and just makes it ''better''

my logic:

nobody WANTS to hurt themselves really, like how nobody wants to off themselves

being reminded helps one to remember that little fact.

or maybe i'm 100% freako..

That theory seems complicated for me.

The one person that told me not to cut was also the same person that was creating situations where I felt like I needed the cutting. So there isn't any negative curiosity because the reason for it was somewhere else.

I think?

Gwyn.
If someone didn't want to hurt themselves, they wouldn't.
Physical pain is easier to take then emotional, you were hurting either way, so why not control where you hurt?
Just like I wanted to hurt myself and for a while I wanted to die.
Just like sometimes I still want to hurt myself, just because I want that old feeling that I got.

Just my two cents, sorry.

It can't be applied to everyone, but thanks for the feed back! Its so interesting to see other points of view =)
