The first stage of a widespread smoking ban has been rolled out in federal prisons, and inmates say they fear it will put prisoners on edge.

Starting Monday, smoking was banned on all property at maximum-security prisons, including the yards. This rule essentially means prisoners will not be allowed to smoke at all while serving time, as there will be nowhere for them to light up.

On May 20, the smoking ban will be extended to medium-security facilities, and at minimum-security facilities on June 2.

Robert Pallagi, a non-smoker in jail for attempted murder, said there could be unrest when the large number of smokers at Canada's prisons are forced to butt out, and all of them are suddenly coping with nicotine withdrawal.
Inmates are said to be three times more likely to smoke than other Canadians.

"A lot of people are pissed off about this," said Pallagi, who is serving a seven-year sentence at the medium-security Archambault penitentiary in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, east of Montreal.

"These people are in jail, and if they’re easily upset, this is not going to help. Tempers will flare."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That's awesome

The prisoners are all pissed off and I just can't seem to care

This way the security guards won't be forced to breath the crap in

Nor will the very expensive facility's wreak

Well, if you did something to be put in a maximum security prison, you're obviously a pretty bad person, so it's not like you shouldn't expect bad things. This is great, like you said Kodie, the security guards won't have to be breathing it in, and it'll be healthier for everyone.

Oh tear tear, they're pissed because they won't get something they want. Well that's the point of prison isn't it. To be put away from things you want to do. Personally I think this will help a few inmates. Several of them will probably go back to smoking when they get out, but maybe a few here and there will actually stay off of them. And maybe it will keep a few inmates from starting in the first place.

I know if your in some maximum security prison it's best to not give the prisoners what they want, but smoking withdrawal can be really dreadful. But I guess they had it coming.

It causes insomnia, bad headaches, dizziness, depression, anger.. which is especially bad in a prison, irritability, anxiety, nausea etc etc..
the prisoners that are severely heavy smokers have to go through severe withdrawal symptoms.
I don't think anyone should go through all that .. like it's pain, and it doesn't go away for several weeks maybe months it can be torturous.
Plus the prisoners are going to be extremely angry and true 'tempers will flare'
I guess if they did comit some serious murder or something then yes, I know they do deserve it.
I just hate it when people suffer, even if they made someone else suffer and perhaps cost them their life.

I guess it is the best thing to do though, it is somewhat better for the smokers health but sometimes it isn't, cause like I said, withdrawal is torturous.

It is of course better for the guards and the surrounding non smokers.
So yea, I'm with this idea.

Oh boo hoo, you can't get some ash in your mouths. Well deal with it.

It might be a bit much to make them all go cold turkey. They could hold all the cigarettes in one location and instead of letting them buy however many they want, they're only allowed so many per day, and keep cutting it back. Or they could give them all the patch to help them out. I think it's good that they're getting rid of the smoking (after-all, all the second-hand smoke is dangerous for the guards who may not care to have cancer, and it's probably not the best for the environment either), but it's cruel to put them all through withdrawals at once (not that the inmates deserve fancy living conditions, but withdrawal can have serious symptoms). I predict that the violence levels are going to go up temporarily, and cooperation is going to go down. When one person is on edge, it's easily dealt with. When a majority of the people are on edge, they all feed off of each other's tension and spaz out.

Also, a thought: If smoking is outlawed in the prisons, aren't they going to fill up even faster now that the guys with life sentences are potentially going to live longer?

I like that.
Make them suffer more so that when they get out,
They'll be less inclined to get back into prison, lol.
In all seriousness, they were right to take away smoking,
For the sake of their health as well as the guards.
