Windows 7 (formerly known as Blackcomb and Vienna) is the working name for the next major version of Microsoft Windows as the successor of Windows Vista. Microsoft has announced that it is "scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year timeframe", and that "the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar." Windows 7 is expected to be released sometime in 2010. The client versions of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. A server variant, codenamed Windows Server 7, is also under development.
Microsoft is maintaining a policy of silence concerning discussion of plans and aspirations for Windows 7 as they focus on the release and marketing of Windows Vista, stating that Microsoft does not want to promise features and then fail to deliver, though some early details of various core operating system features have emerged. As a result, little is known about the feature set, though public presentations from company officials have disseminated information about some features. Leaked information from people to whom Milestone 1 (M1) of Windows 7 was shipped also provides some insight into the feature set.

I don't get what was wrong with XP. I for one think that Microsoft is a bit greedy and just wants to force everyone who uses windows to buy the new OS lest they have tons of compatability issues. This shows exactly how much of a failure Vista was, as well. This whole thing has got me thinking about switching over to Linux for good.

I'm sticking with XP, it works. I've got a copy of Ubuntu now, I might partition one of my hard drives and install it later on.
If this Windows 7 is any good (not getting my hopes up at all) then balls to microsoft, they're just wanting more money lol.
SP3 coming out for XP soon, even more bug fixes making it even more stable and secure.

What's SP3? I've never done any upgrades to my XP and everything still works quite peachy-keen. I thought windows was dropping support for XP anyways, or has that not happened yet?

Apperently not. SP3 (Service Pack Three) is a big update that covers a lot of bugs and fixes. They released SP1 for Vista not long ago.

This new Windows will be not that good just like Vista does.
And yes the XP SP3 will be ready in some time, but right now is RC2 and you can downland it on or find more information:

Last I heard, They're trying to rush "Windows Seven" out to try to make up for Vista's shortcomings, and it's basically going to be Vista, with things fixed, and some added things.
Obviously it may or may not be that way, but currently, the testing builds of Windows Seven are things you install on top of Vista SP1.
Oh, and for those who want SP3 for XP, it IS out. The final, that is.
I made a thread here about it: http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23408
I've had it installed on several computers for a week and a half now. Seems to be working quite well. Final build is 5512, which this is.

XP SP3 delayed by retailer glitch
Wednesday, 30 April 2008, 9:56 AM
MICROSOFT has pulled the plug on the expected release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 because of a glitch in the way it works with MS Retail Management Systems (RMS).
Anyone who jumped the gun and downloaded the update from any one of the non-official sources bouncing around the Wibble for the last couple of days should think twice before hitting the install button
Mirosoft must've sorted this now then!

Nah, I don't think they've completely sorted it. The problem that they had with it was in an obscure component that VERY few people would ever use.
They haven't publicly posted the links for the download because of it, but the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) copy of it that was released on April 21st was put on the Windows Update Server which is the ones I linked to. They're still current official downloads, and anyone not needing the RMS function has no need to worry about waiting for the fix. The copy on their server right now is just fine, which is why I linked them.

You'd have to have software that specially uses it, and have it specifically set up that way.
If you don't (Which is almost a 0% chance), then it's 100% safe to use the Service Pack, as nothing else will be changed, and it could be weeks before MS gets around to fixing it.

I don't get it... If it's not broken, don't fix it.
The only operating system I've ever used is Windows 3.1 (since 1992). :D

Well its the same concept as Windows 98 and all those. Sure there was nothing wrong with them but they just wanted a better version of it. Simple :D

I'm not sure if you can install TCP/IP in 3.1 or not. I know you can in WFW 3.11, so I'd venture to guess it's possible.
Although, limitation of mainly 16 bit programs, and extremely old versions of Netscape and IE don't really thrill me.
I had fun making a WFW 3.11 Live CD a few years ago.

There were a lot of issues with 98. A Lot. If you wanted to do extremely basic things, not have hardly anything running, and have a lot of things now that can't be run on it, then you'd be good.
I would venture to throw the claim out there that XP was Microsoft's best (Non-Server) OS to date. The NT Architecture is a lot better than the 9x architecture ever was.

I seem to have a problem with older OSs. I don't like the lower graphics capabilities when playing video games and they always seem to freeze on me for some reason or another. Don't ask why. I agree that XP has thus far been the best operating system to date. I wish they would just keep XP and just release upgrades for it or something instead of up and making a $200 OS that is really annoying to use and worse than the old one.
