Well if they're heavy and hard to stop, or if you ever start getting them more than once a week, you should talk to your doctor.
Otherwise, if the area you live in is experiencing low humidity or you're often indoors with the heater on, that can dry out your nasal membranes and make you more susceptible to bleeding. You could try an over the counter saline spray, a few spritzes in each nostril once a day, and see if that helps. Allergies are also a common cause of nosebleeds, so if you have allergy problems to start with, maybe talk to your doctor about what you can do to help keep your nosebleeds under control.
As for stopping it once you're already bleeding: all you can really do is put some tissue in your nose to keep from dripping all over yourself and the floor, lean slightly forward (leaning back causes the blood to drip down your throat and into your stomach, which can make you sick), and pinch the soft part of your nose, between the end and the hard bony part at the top. Keep pinching for at least 5 minutes before you let go, and if it's still bleeding then keep pinching for at least another 10 minutes. You can also put an ice pack on the bridge of your nose to constrict the blood vessels a bit. Afterwards, try to avoid activities which may start it bleeding again, such as blowing your nose or bending over.
Also, just a note: If you get blood on your hands you need to do your best to have someone else open doors for you and turn on the faucet for you to wash your hands, to avoid the spread of blood-born pathogens.

What I do when it's really dry here is I put Vaseline in my nose before I go to sleep.

i had this problem, used to get blood noses all the time, but then i went to the doctor and got my nose quarterised, which i think is where they block of the blood vessels to your nose, and this worked for me for ages, until about a year ago, when i got a blood nose, but that was the only one since
