Miley Cyrus says Vanity Fair photo spread embarrasses her Mon Apr 28, 4:04 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - Miley Cyrus is taking issue with a photo of herself that's going around, and it's not another amateur, truth-or-dare Internet snapshot — it's the handiwork of Annie Leibovitz.

"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

The photos, appearing in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, were taken by Leibovitz, a renowned celebrity photographer whose edgy, silver-toned portraits have included subjects such as Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and a naked, pregnant Demi Moore.

"I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted," Leibovitz said in a statement released by Vanity Fair. "Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful."

The Cyrus pictures accompany an interview with the 15-year-old pop star and her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus. One photo in particular is causing the biggest stir: the teen idol is wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet, looking over her shoulder with her back exposed.

The Disney Channel, which airs Cyrus' TV show "Hannah Montana," was also critical of Vanity Fair.

"Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines," a network statement said.

Vanity Fair defended the story and photo shoot in a statement of its own.

"Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day," the magazine said. "Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."

In a caption released by Vanity Fair with the photo, Cyrus expressed her comfort with how the apparently topless picture turned out.

"I think it's really artsy," she told the magazine at the time. "It wasn't in a skanky way. Annie took, like, a beautiful shot, and I thought that was really cool. That's what she wanted me to do, and you can't say no to Annie."

A handful of borderline racy snapshots of a girl who appeared to be Cyrus have appeared on the Internet in recent months, including images of a girl posing in her underwear and bikini last week. In one shot, she's draped over a young man.

Cyrus is one of the biggest — and most G-rated — acts in the country and is often considered a role model for young girls. Her "Best of Both Worlds" tour sold out arenas, and her successful 3-D concert film collected $31.3 million in its opening weekend in February.

To be honest I would have thought that she had a better back than that.

i don't think its right for a 15yo to do that, no matter how "tasteful" a shot it might be. if my girlfriend, who is the same age as miley, did that it would make me sick.

I agree this is just awful. They could have shot porn for all she knew.

Everyone in the 'Celeb' world experiences this kind of crap.

Besides, I happen to like Miley Cyrus, in fact...she happens to be like one of my role models. I don't know why this had to happen though, it's really a BIG shame.

Also, that person in the picture, really doesn't look like her.

Its not a big deal it could be a whole lot worse. At least she's not showing any goods and that picture is very artistic its just people with sick minds and who take things seriously who have a problem with it.

Agreed.
I wouldn't have had any second thoughts past the artistic value of it.

Overblown celebrity bullshit, as usual. Wow, her bare back, big deal.

i see what your all saying, but i don't think a 15 yo should be posing for any topless photo whether its tasteful or for art purposes. but, that just my opinion.

It is artistic. It is entirely non-explicit. It just a bare back: what's sexy about a bare back? What's shocking about it? Nothing at all! And even if she would have been showing some more, it would have been artistic and non explicit. A body is a body and she happens to have a good looking body. What is all the fuss about? It is blown out of proportions.

you stole my idea!! but still i dont think this is a very big deal. i mean there isnt anything showing. i think even with the picture she is still a good role model for children. i mean look at Vanessa Hudgens (another popular Disney star) she posed fully naked and everything was showing. also i dont think the pictures are really goood. they make her look miserable and depressed. so i still suport Miley and it really isnt a big deal i guess is what im trying to say. also i bet by the time she is 21 she will be in an explicit movie where she will be showing her stuff. but that is just my opinion.

Still, it is her. I mean if you only look at the pictures with diyed hair then it looks like her but her with black hair doesn't fit.

The perverts should be rejoicing at this ;)

^^ QFT. Let her do what she wants. I still respect her. I may not enjoy her music that much, but I respect her, at least she hasn't followed the path of Jamie Lynn.

Yeah you got me there. I mean respect her for pursuing a career in music but her music isn't my type.

I mean still it's big to a lot of people.

yeah it could of been much worser than that, but luckily it wasn't and she hasn't lost any fans just because of that.

I think it's a great that a 15 year old would do that, these days there are too many people telling us what's right and what's not. But I have to admit, she looks rather horrible like that when I normally think she's rather beautiful.

Okay, well...it is a little provacative but its art. If Lidnsey and Paris can run around without underwear why cant Miley take intentional pictures that were supposed to be tasteful. Its not bad it just didn't recieve well.

I think they are making a big deal because this is used as a distraction from the real news.

she was not naked, her parents were on set, and it is the legendary annie leibowitz.

They were even criticizing her pic with her dad, which i thought looked very nice.

again this is a distraction that the media uses to make you look away from things that actually matter.

TBH, I really don't care.
Just IMO, the fact that you can clearly see her ribs and bones (showing through on her back) just sends out more ammo for negative body-image for young girls who look up to her.

Well, it's not like it shows anything much other than her back.
It is somewhat an artistic photograph, but she is only 15 and shouldn't be posing topless..
Even if she is covered by a satin sheet.
Her parents did leave the scene when these photos were taken, so I can imagine the photographer taking advantage of Miley.

EXACTLY it is art but to be 15 posing topless even covering makes me angery *twitch* wait shes 15 oo now im angery

Oh, calm down will you ... I doubt she's completely topless. Do you really think a 15 year old's parents would consent for their daughter to do pics where she was completely nude/topless under a sheet/blanket.
This really doesn't have anything to do with you, and IMO you're really overreacting, so simmer down a bit. :P

If people are so outraged by it they shouldn't be giving it so much attention in the first place.

wow actually this issue is so overrated. people are acting like it's the 70's where a little skin showing is considered porno. dude, a Dove commercial is more skin showing than this picture. I know there's this huge "you're setting a bad role model for your young fans thing" but hey, even if Miss Cyrus didn't finish the "slutty" image job for the little girls, MTV and MuchMusic already did.

Its just those people who use people's bodies for their own self pleasure.. Its like watching Pornogrophy but you dont see it all... It looks like she's in bed and thats worse.. Its just these crazy people who have the urge and guts to do that stuff. We just have to deal with it..

Reporters and Photo Takers like to take pictures to where she looks Sexy... That leads to Pornogrophy... Which leads to more..

Its those people who look at that stuff who demand more which interfears with our lives making us tempted to look at it also...

That picture looks like shes in bed, so.. Whats next?

The Batman
May 4th, 2008, 10:05 PM
That picture wasn't taken to look sexy it was taken as an art form thats all its just people with their mind in the gutter that look at it wrong.

I believe people think its a big deal because lately little Miley and her racy myspace pictures have been leaking out. So everyone thinks, whats next? Oh right, a topless picture.
What will that lead to?
It's just Miley is considered a "role model" to some kids.. pfft.
Just another popular Disney star thats expected to keep her rep super clean.

Dante

I can't believe this is such a big deal... I've been waiting for it to blow over, but it's not. Now I'm not a Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana fan, but still, the reaction of some parents is just so fucking absurd. Okay, she made ONE mistake, if you can even call it that... Who cares? She's not pregnant, she didn't OD on drugs, she wasn't arrested for lewd conduct... She hasn't had any other problems... Who cares? What's the big deal? It's a fucking picture for fucksakes...
