Actually, if you want to make your own forums for free, Invisionfree is the one I find to be the best when it comes to free forum hosting. It's the only one I use, and has never disappointed me. You might want to check it out.

You can't do that with invisionfree, I know. They will want you to use their type of forums instead of someone else's so people will sign up for their hosting service.

If you set up your own forums without relying on another site's scripts (like Invisionfree), you'll have the freedom to transfer your forums content around.
You can stick with Invisionfree if you want, but it puts ads on your site. To start out a set of your own forums that you can modify, you'll need to pick a script to use on your site. There are many free kinds out there, like phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com) (a very popular one that VT started out on), SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/), and myBB (http://www.mybboard.net).
Then, pick out a host; there are many free ones out there (try looking through FWS (http://www.freewebspace.net/)). You'll need a host that provides at least 1 SQL database (usually MySQL or PostgreSQL), FTP access, and disk space. Things get even easier if the host provides cPanel and Fantastico (which has numerous scripts that it can install for you). Free hosts are usually post-to-host, meaning you'll need to make a certain amount of posts in order to qualify, and sometimes, you'll have to maintain a certain monthly quota of posts. Other hosts require ads, as intrusive as banner ads or minimal like a small link. If you find a host that provides free hosting without putting ads on your site and without post-to-host, I wouldn't expect to last around too long if it's offering the service to many other people.
Once you're on board with a host, create the MySQL database, edit the config file, upload the forum script, and run the forum script's install file. Your forums are portable and can move to another host if the need arises by keeping a database backup and a backup of your script files.
And as I preview this, I see your request Jack, but I'm leaving all that I typed, so it's not a waste. :P
Locked.
