It occurs most commonly in adolescents and young adults, where it is characterized by fever, sore throat, muscle soreness, and fatigue. Infectious Mononucleosis typically produces a very mild illness in small children, but is usually asymptomatic. Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which infects B cells (B-lymphocytes), producing a reactive lymphocytosis and atypical T cells (T-lymphocytes) known as Downey bodies.
Its usually spread by saliva. Kissing someone, drinking after someone, something of that nature.

I've had mono twice. The first time, I was just lethargic, my throat was slightly sore, and the glands in my neck were slightly swollen (you could feel them when you pressed with your fingers, but the swelling wasn't enough that you could see it). The second time was about the same, though my throat was a little more sore that time, and my spleen became enlarged. I hear the spleen thing is fairly common, though I'd never heard of it happening before. Basically, I had a dull ache on the left side of my stomach and I wasn't allowed to do anything in P.E. that could cause me to be hit in the stomach or back for 6 weeks (being enlarged, if I got hit hard enough it could have potentially ruptured), until it was certain than my spleen was it's normal size again.
Sometimes, the glands in the neck swell really big, like to the size of ping pong balls or even larger in some cases.
The symptoms vary, but those are the most common I think.
It's transmitted through saliva, and someone can have mono without realizing it (either because they're lucky enough to have no real symptoms or because the virus can lay dormant), so try not to share drinks or chapstick or anything of the like, and if your family washes dishes by hand rather than using a dishwasher, be sure to clean them thoroughly. Trust me, you don't want an enlarged spleen, it makes P.E. very boring when you're the lone chick walking the track while everyone has fun. xP

This is odd, because my mom said when she had mono the symptoms were horrible and she had it for a long time. It sounded like a terrible disease I would never want to get. Except apparently it made her insomnia go away. I dunno, I'll ask her tommorow and get back to you.
