I am a 15 year old male. I am not a complete vegetarian, but at school I eat the vegetarian meal plan. My mom knows and she told me to be careful with soy because it can make me "feminine" (like man boobs). Is this true? If so, then how much soy is unsafe for me to have? I looked it up online and have no definitive answer in how much is okay for my age as a male to have. All responses are appreciated.

I think that's a myth.
But what I know is true is that you don't want to base your entire diet around one type of plant or meat.

A few lines from The Big Bang Theory (yes, I know - make of it what you will!!):
Sheldon: Oh, really, Leonard? Are you going to have another one of your hissy fits?
Leonard: Hissy fits? I have hissy fits?
Sheldon: Yes, and I have a theory why. Because of your lactose intolerance, you switched over to soy milk. Soy contains estrogen-mimicking compounds. I think your morning Cocoa Puffs are turning you into a hysterical woman.
If its on tv, it must be true right? Why would tv lie?!

To quote TOP
"We don't believe, what's on, TV. Because it's what we want to believe" (or something like that)
But I forgot about that that is true it was the The Big Bang Theory... I honestly don't know.
And I don't know how to multi quote but I'm talking about eating like twice or three times a week not everyday.

I don't think soy will make you become "Feminine" or grow man boobs. As far as i know of, if you look at people who are vegans or vegetarian they are in good shape and do not have any "Feminine" features.
I think your mother is just saying those things to make you eat more options.

Sounds misinformed to me.
Imagine all the transsexuals dosing up on Soy to save money on hormone injections!
Unless you are consuming several bucket loads a day, I wouldn't worry about it. Besides, beef is actually extremely bad for you.

Estrogen is one of the hormones responsible for the development of breast in women and there is a similar hormone in soy milk. The amounts of this hormone in soy milk is not enough to cause a boy to develop breast even if he consumed it over a life time.
Phytoestrogens are compounds found in plants that are chemically similar to the hormone estrogen. Normally thought of as involved in female reproduction, estrogens control many important aspects for the body in men and women: metabolism, bone and blood vessel health, skin tone, cholesterol level, fluid balance and sexual desire. Soy is one of the richest sources of phytoestrogen, containing the highest levels of isoflavones in food.

That's a myth, nutritionists always seem to invent a side effect for these types of food. Anyone can correct me cause I'm not sure about it but I believe asian food typically contains soy in like 80 of their meals, and I don't see many asians with man boobs.

That's crazy, to be honest. Our family is not vegetarian strictly, but we grew up with tofu in many forms (especially the tofu hot dogs and sausages for snacks and lunch). It is a good source of protein, with no fat. Like any other food, eat it in moderation.

Explain how Asian men are flat chested :P
But seriously- The Japanese eat shit tons of edamame with a cold glass of beer- Japanese are not particularly known for manboobs unless they are sumo wrestlers
As as we've all learned from Katamari, sumo wrestlers eat everything in sight :))
Even people (if you don't get the joke just play the game obv sumo wrestlers aren't your local Hannibal Lecters)
But yeah I think that's a myth- most milk and meat have hormones but I don't think it actually affects humans that much. It's just one of those "well in theory" things that doesn't ever really come to fruition I think

Chicken, bacon and pork are loaded with growth hormones, l'm pretty sure there's some research suggesting they're responsible for the early onset of puberty in girls, though l don't know about any other side effects.

Soy does contain estrogen. Google it.
But you have to eat a lot for it to affect you. From what I remember reading it just lowers sperm count. But again, you have to eat a lot.
Don't trust my opinion though, the science is out there. :)
