I'm totally drained after this week. I only have a Monday-Thursday week which is great because of the three-day weekend but it means I have a full-time schedule crammed into four days. Second semester will let up because I'll only have four classes, not five, since I'm slightly ahead already but gaaaaaah. Thursdays I'm on campus from about 8am to potentially 6:30pm depending on the week (if I have a tutorial or not). Mondays aren't as long but I have a two-hour lecture then a tutorial immediately afterwards. Three hours of women's studies in a row. So. Freaking. Long. Mid-week is fine but I've been out of full-time school for so long that I'm just... overwhelmed.

And what I hate about first year is that you're only allowed two classes within the same subject since technically you don't declare your major until second year. So I have two classes I'm really not a fan of. Despite being really strong in English, my literature class is already sucking out my soul, and I have a global studies class that, while moderately interesting, was something I picked out of a hat to fill up my timetable.

I'm mostly just venting. I know I'm older than a majority of this site's target audience and I know a lot of you, if you are in university, have started a lot younger than me and you probably aren't experiencing the same "holy shit this is what school is like??" mindfuck that I am. I haven't been in full-time school for... at least four years, one of which I wasn't in school at all. *screams into the abyss* It's a little weird being older than a majority of my peers but I look like I'm still in high school which makes people laugh when they realize I'm actually OLDER than them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying it and I know I'm gonna enjoy the heck out of my major but there's just a lot of forces working against me, I'm already behind, I'm already thinking of visiting academic counselling for some advice.

Calm down. It will level out as you become more acclimated to the schedule. We all have adjustment to make when faced with change. And being at university is a big change for you, as for everyone you meet. Me, I am 18 and classified as a junior, so I am a couple years younger than the people in my classes. I am good with that because I have always dated people 2 to 4 years older. My big adjustment is a lighter class load: the last two years I was dual enrolled in HS and CC, played varsity football and baseball and worked on a ranch. Now, no varsity sports (sad/glad) just classes (all of which I like) and work in an office setting. No longer living at home with family. BIG change for this country boy. So hang in there and get on top of studies-and then stay there! Good luck, relax, avoid last minute stress, and forget about age differences, they really don't matter.
btw, academic counseling exists so we can get advice and help when we need it, so take advantage of the service you are paying for. Take advantage of all the school has to offer to make your experience stress free (in as much is possible) and successful.

Age differences don't really bother me, that was more just an observation. Point being I've been out of school a lot longer than them and I've fallen out of habits they've only been neglecting for a couple of months rather than several years.

I'm also disabled, which I didn't mention, which makes all of this a lot more stressful. I'm a perfectionist and a disabled perfectionist attending a pretty high standard university is a... well, potentially poor combination.

I get it, but please hang in there and get the help you need to be successful. I am pulling for you!

I feel ya. I, too, hate my university and almost all my classes save one (ancient history) are also sucking out my soul. Here ur allowed to pick ur major first year, but no matter how far ahead you are (and I'm far) u can't do any extra coursework :(
Every day is depressing :(

What kind of habits in particular are you having trouble with? And nothing wrong with being a perfectionist, disabled or not, once you get said habits down again I think you will be able to excel past the younger people :)
