Seriously, what kind of university refuses to support passionate people? The University Leiden, that's what! Seriously, you HAVE to follow the curriculum even if ur ahead of it, unless u bitch for ages and prove u r ahead of it, and then you get told: 'tough beans' and sent away with 'extra work' which will barely take a week (due in 6 weeks. Go figure).
And if ur considering switching majors (school started 2 weeks ago) u get told no. Ur not even allowed to sit in on other courses for some inexplicable reason WTH!!!!

End rant

I think that with any school you ever attend you're going to be expected to follow the curriculum, at least to an extent. Also, I wouldn't expect to be allowed to sit in on classes which you didn't pay for. I would be shocked if they did let you sit in on other classes for free...

That's really a shame, here in Brazil anyone can take classes they're not enrolled in, because most colleges/universities are public and therefore any citizen should be allowed to watch the classes.

But how strict can the curriculum be? Here you can usually choose what classes you'll take each semester, within some limits, so you can be a bit ahead or behind.

On the other hand, you're in Leiden, I'm doing college in a third world country. :P

Ur actually sometimes allowed to sit in classes for free, just not Russian cuz they're really far ahead on their program and strict on who gets to join them. Ah well

I spoke to my study coordinator today and apparently there's a way to take separate classes in the course. Yay! :)

That's the same as the course I'm in.

I'm willing to bet Leiden has a massive library though and one that's bound to be stocked full of material related to your major. Bored - then head in and grab something that's not so boring. I spent the entirety of intro. to economics reading advanced economics textbooks. Still bored - I would imagine Leiden is subscribed to a number of academic databases that stock more articles - in one major alone - than someone might hope to get through their entire time in university.

Point is that universities offer numerous ways for the more advanced students to take a lead outside traditional lectures.

Hmm, I didn't know that about the library. I'll check it out then; thanks :)
