Okay, so MGS V: TPP has been released, and -- unsurprisingly -- the reviews have been excellent (95 on Metacritic, 10/10 IGN, 10/10 Gamespot, etc.). It looks really interesting since it's about the Cold War, terrorism, child soldiers, nuclear weapons... And it's set in 1984. The thing is: the whole story of the franchise is a clusterfuck. I've seen like 5 videos summarizing the story and I still don't know what the heck is going on. Anyone know a good video/webstie with a tl;dr version of the full franchise?

Stick to what is considered canon by the developers. Here's the order in which you need to play to understand the story:

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (1964)
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (1974)
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (1975)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (1984)
Metal Gear (1995)
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1999)
Metal Gear Solid (2005)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2007/2009)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2014)

Playing in canonical order will help you get the story straight. Most of the games you can find in the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection that was released two years ago. You can find it almost anywhere for 20 or 30 bucks now. It's a great way to get into the MG series. The only other games that I would suggest you'd play (because they're considered canon spin-offs) are MGS: Portable Ops and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Don't play them until you do the main canon first, though; otherwise, you'll get all fucked up again.

you should play them in the order they have been made, like it was originally intended. MGS3 is not supposed to be played before MGS2. is like watching star wars I II III before IV V VI, it doesnt make sense and ruins everything.

As Aisle of Plenty, best way to understand MGS is to actually play it. I'm going to revisit a few games before I play Phantom Pain.
