Is it odd that I think there should be a complete separation from friends/significant-others with parents? Sort of like complete separation of State and Church. Not that there's embarassment of presenting one side to the other... But just to have a failsafe in case something between you and your friends/SO/parents and you don't want the other parties to find out?

You mean, a strict separation between your friends and your parents?
I've this separation for years.

My girlfriend currently keeps this separation because her family's... Odd, to say the least. It makes sense. I only have my immediate family (parents and sister) and there's usually no reason for they to interact with friends of mine. I have not problem if they do have to, however.

That's not necessarily true for everyone, but sometimes it's better. If I'm seeing someone, you bet I'm not mentioning it to my mother, because she's always so weird around her kids' s/o. And my dad is pretty intimidating, so.
But it shouldn't be much of an issue if they have nice parents.

I don't bring those kinds of things up with my family, just cause that's who I am and it's really not their business for the time being. I mean, eventually there will have to be a meeting of some kind but shrug.
