Chapter 1
An Announcement
50 days until the end of the 8th grade. 3 minutes until a great announcement. Time is of the essence in life as well as money but that’s beside the point.
Our teacher Mrs. Macan strutted briskly into the room. “Good morning class,” she said. No response. “I said good morning class.”
“Good mornin’ Mrs. Macan,” we managed to moan together in one monotone voice too late in the day and too tired to care how we sounded.
“I have just gotten some great news from our principal. It’s about, let’s call it, a field trip,” Mrs. Macan said as she passed out a piece of paper to everyone in the room. A round of gasps emerged from the class as they began to read the notice. “As you can see in a few months we will be going on a field trip to New York.”
I personally couldn’t believe it. To my best friend Jack I whispered, “New York, the Big Apple, what could be better and I haven’t even read the notice yet.
“Yah,” he said absently as he stared at Hailey, his secret crush and my other best friend. I’ve known her nearly forever. We’ve had our ups and downs, brake-ups and make-ups. Yes I did say break-ups and make-ups, so yes that means I have gone out with her. But right now we are just FRIENDS and friends only.
As I started to read the notice I saw how great the trip actually was going to be. I was going to be for 5 days and 4 nights. Also we are going to go to a bunch of cool places in New York like Yankee Stadium and the Statue of Liberty.
As the teacher started to talk again I put the notice into my folder and listened. “…So to night for homework you need to get this permission slip signed and give the information to your parents,” she said to us as she headed back to her desk.
To me the rest of the day, which was only another hour, was a blur. The teacher got cut of as the bell rang and all the students left to go to their lockers.
On my way out of the room I ran into Hailey so we started talking about the trip. Then Jack literally ran into Hailey and both their books papers went everywhere.
“Whoa there Jack, calm down, I know you’re exited about New York but there is no reason to bump into nice girls like our friend Hailey there,” I jokingly said as I helped Hailey pick up her books. I looked over at Jack and he gave me a Death Stare so I mouthed ‘what’ and he mouthed back ‘I’m gunna kill you.”
I shrugged it off for now because the halls were half empty by now so we hurried off to our lockers. Me and Hailey’s lockers are right next to each others due to some, uh, trading I did earlier in the year. “We should probably start walking home Hailey,” I suggested as she was looking into her mirror fixing her hair.
“Huh,” she said, “Did you say something.”
“Ya I said we should start heading home. And what was up with that. You totally spaced out on me. What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong, I was just thinking about, well, stuff.”
“Like.”
“Family, school, friends, close friends, stuff like that,” as she said ‘close’she emphasized it. I wonder what she meant by that? I decided to ignore that too because now there are 5 people including us and Jack in the hall.
“Are you ready?” I asked.
“Ya,” she said, “let’s get Jack and leave.”
