Hey everyone, so recently I lost 85 pounds, going from overweight to on the border of underweight. When I started my diet, I was 6 foot, about halfway/towards the end I was 6 foot 1, and recently when I just casually measured myself (the other 2 measurements were by the doctor) I was 5' 11". I have no idea if I really did shrink because this was just a measurement I did, not the doctor's measurement, but I'm really worried. Can large diets during puberty cause shrinking in height? Thanks!:metal:

Height can naturally vary at different times of the day. If you measure yourself in the morning, you'd have a larger value than in the evening. Likewise, you might have a different value if you used a different set of measuring tools. That might account for it.

^It was covered by the above post but also due to the fact that you measured yourself, you could've simply mis-measured anyways.

The discs in the spine can vary in thickness. They tend to be at their thickest, and therefore your height at it maximum, in the morning and they gradually compress during the day so just before bed you are slightly shorter than in the morning. For a young person that is a temprory effect whereas in old people they don't fully expand again so old people can be a little shoter than when they were young.

Method of measurement can be the other big variable. You need to measure without shoes on, you need to stand straight and not slouch and, if you standing against the wall have the backs of you feet up to it so your legs are not at an angle. You also need to hold your head so the top of it is horizontal. Any deviations from this can cause the measurement to be inaccurate from one time to another.

I think you measured wrong

I doubt that you've shrunk (I don't even know if that's the past tense for 'shrink' but I'll roll with it anyway) at 17 so it's probably just because you measured yourself or different measurement tools.
