I need to know a good place to get some cause I want to start using my computer for more gaming. I would just go to radio shack or walmart to get it but once i open the computer I'm about as smart as a hillbilly trying to program a vcr.

My preferred choice for buying most computer hardware is Newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/).

Here is a Link (http://www.newegg.com/Store/Category.aspx?Category=17&name=Memory) to the RAM Subsection.

You would have to know what type of RAM your computer takes.

If you don't know, Give us the Computer Make/Model, and we can help you out.

You can buy RAM from retail stores, but generally, it's more expensive.

Look for a model number somewhere.

It may be on the front of the computer, or on the back.

It also may be shown if you right click on "My Computer" or "Computer" and click "Properties." Many times, it will be listed right there, near where it says how much RAM your computer already has.

Another option, if you can't find any of those, download this program here:

http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_144.zip

Unzip it, and run the .EXE program that will be there. When it loads, click the "Mainboard" Tab at the top, and tell us what it says for "Manufacturer" and "Model." The first Two Horizontal boxes for "Chipset" may be helpful also.

I've outlined them in Red and Green Below. You've give the text that is in those boxes on your computer:

EDIT:

Also, there is a Memory, and SPD Tab in the program. Under Memory, it should say what type of RAM it is. It'll likely say "DDR," "DDR2," or "SDRAM" or something.

It would be nice to know how many Sticks of RAM you have in your computer right now, and how many places (Slots) you have to install RAM. If you have 2 slots, and you're using two, you'd have to get a different arrangement than if you had 1 stick, and had 2 slots.

Also, how much RAM do you want Total?

where can i find out how many slots I have

Okay, Well, Generally, the easiest, most fool-proof way to know how many slots you have for RAM is to physically look.

But, I checked HP's Website (Compaq was Bought out by HP a few years ago), and it says the computer uses DDR2 RAM, and has a total of 2 Slots, and 1 is used.

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/12132708-12133156-78308260-78308260-78308260-79482143-79917661.html

So, here is a link for you:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147+1052108080+1052408147&name=DDR2+533+(PC2+4200 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147+1052108080+1052408147&name=DDR2+533+%28PC2+4200))

That is a link for Newegg, for the DDR2 RAM.

But, the question now is, How much RAM do you want to have in it when you're done?

Also, do you want to buy it online? Or, would you prefer to buy it in a store?

If a store, where would be the most likely place? Best Buy? Circuit City? Etc?

If you know exactly how much you want, and if you have a preference of where to buy it from, let me know, and I can give you links to the respective places, and some suggestions on which to buy.

From looking at everything I can find, HP (Compaq) is saying that the MAX RAM the computer can handle is 2GB. I'm not sure how accurate that is, as it sounds kind of odd, but to be safe, you might want to go with what they say, unless you can find out that it actually supports more.

It says "MAX: 2GB (2x1GB)." So, you' need two sticks of 1GB, and you'd have to take the 512MB Stick that is in there out.

Or, you could just add a 1GB stick, and have 1.5GB total.
