View Full Version : Teenage Stress

Contrary to popular belief, teenagers don't have things that cause them stress. The source of stress is ourselves- our panicky, paranoid, overreacting, and melodromatic selves. Every issue and challenge becomes a national problem, ever grade becomes the determination of our future, and every relationship is a reflection of all conceivable future relationships for the rest of our lives.

I have a friend, we'll call her Susie, who was freaking out over a research paper. Susie was positive that if she got anything less than an A+, her grade for the course would suffer, which would bring down her GPA, which would dissuade colleges from accepting her, which would prevent her from finding a suitable career, which would leave her in poverty and despair. No matter how much I tried to convince Susie that this type of thinking was not only irrational and ludicrous but also dangerous for her mental health, she would wave me away and work feverishly on the Assignment from Hell.

Susie got a fantastic grade, compared to the rest of our oh-so-intelligent class. When she got the paper back I was shocked at her lack of rejoicing. She calmly told us of her total and utter pwnage without so much as a smug smile. I'll never understand it.

The point of this story is that we are quite capable of driving ourselves totally and completely out of our minds, which we needlessly do on many occasions. We are the epitome of freaking out and stressing and all too often bear the headless chicken attitude. We are our greatest enemy and source of stress. God help us.
