I'm currently trying to lose some weight, and I heard that sleeping more can help get rid of unecessary kilograms.
I go to sleep somewhere after 11pm usually, it varies but I never fall asleep before 10.30pm. Sometimes I stay awake on normal days where I have school up to 1am. I have to wake up around 7 when I have school.
I spend my evenings on my computer watching videos, playing games, watching movies,tv shows etc... I'm addicted to my computer I guess!
I really want to change my habits. I want to have about 9 hours of sleep, but going to sleep at 10pm seems impossible to me.
Any tips how to change my habits and be less of a night owl? These extra two hours sound great so I'd like to change that, especially if this can help me lose some weight.
Thanks already :)

This is the first time i have heard about sleeping helping you lose weight. It sounds a bit dubious to me. Where did you hear this?

It's scientifically proven apparently, read some websites about it. I believe it xD

Over sleeping can actually be pretty harmful for your health, you'll end up feeling lethargic during the day and its harder to concentrate. I wouldn't suggest using it as a means of losing weight at all, use the extra 2 hours to take up yoga or another form of exercise that you can do at home and is reasonably easy to start. I honestly wouldn't believe that sleeping can do anything at all for losing weight and even if it does, it will be nothing major and you'll probably end up disappointed.
Make yourself eat a better diet and pairing that with regular regular exercise and you'll definitely feel better about yourself and start to see a change in appearance.

When you’re short on sleep, it’s easy to lean on a large latte to get moving. You might be tempted to skip exercise (too tired), get takeout for dinner, and then turn in late because you’re uncomfortably full.

It's not a matter of if you sleep a certain number of hours you will loose how ever many pounds. I think it's a matter of energy and balance that will help motivate you to eat healthy and workout.
like Nikki said, too much sleep has similar effects as not getting enough

its harder than youd think to actually sleep more than what your body desires to the point of unhealth so i wouldnt worry 2 much about that unless it became an issue for your social life -- 9 hours is ideal for teenagers so good target but dont fret if you can only fit in 7-8, thats plenty enough to function and (as others have posted) exercise, which can have a much greater impact on weight loss

One thing is to get away from electronic devices about an hour before you plan to go to sleep. The light from those devices stimulate your brain causing it to stay alert. It is hard to do, with homework on the computer, games, or watching tv, but it helps your brain to shut down for sleep.

There are a lot of research which seems to connect sleeping right as part of losing weight

^ What.
I can't say I haven't heard this one before. My girlfriend allegedly lost a ton of weight by being sedentary during vacations. Sounds odd, but I do believe it's true.

I think losing weight is part of a conscious all-round lifestyle change and isn't dependent on solely one thing or another.
I've never really been overweight, but I did find myself becoming quite unhealthy when I was stressed out with school and stuff and found myself with a pile of bad habits and my body got way out of shape!
You don't necessarily need to force yourself to get a full 9 hours of sleep a night. Something that extreme may cause you to lose focus on other things, like not finishing your schoolwork or ending things abruptly in order to get to bed on time. Figure out how your body's natural sleep pattern works and plan to get full sleep cycles around 7-8 hours, then give yourself time to wake up and have a healthy breakfast to kickstart your metabolism each day.
Obviously there are many other attributes like stress, diet and exercise, none of which are any less significant than the others!

I think it is more proven that getting around 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is more healthier for your body then sleeping a lot of hours. I also have never heard that sleeping a lot will help you lose weight. I have heard almost the opposite of that as if you eat at night and then go to sleep it stores the fat much more. I think what will help you more is to first eat somewhat healthier and get away from sitting at the computer a lot and exercise. Good Luck in losing your weight.

Thanks for answering, I really thought that sleeping habits could help losing help. And my sister - who is all about diets, and food, and good lifestyle even claims so. Apparently she sleeps for eight hours now, instead of six, and it helped her to lose already 10 kilograms in about two months, but then she has been quite sick, cause of stomach issues which made her quite skinny...
As for a diet I've thought about not cutting on sugar completely, I generally eat healthy, I don't drink too much sugary stuff, neither eat crisps, fast food and salty snacks. At times I do of course, but like three times a school year max.
I've thought about cutting on white bread though, cause I tend to eat way too much bread. And also no sodas, like coke and sprite. And avoid too much cookies, and all the sweet stuff we love so much. Like even if some is proposed to me, I'll eat two cookies max, and not the whole package, haha you know what I mean guys. We all love sugar x)
As for exercise I have a few ideas of sports... but I might do a separate post about it. But I guess here we can talk about everything... just generally to have a better lifestyle. :)
Is that adequate?
Tell me guys your ideas, you're all really helpful! :)

The theory of sleeping isnt about loosing weight, it is about preventing weight gain. The theory is that if you go to sleep earlier, lets say you usually go to bed at 11, but with this theory you go to bed at 10 you are not going to keep getting up and going to get something to eat therefore putting on additional weight. Additionally, when sleeping your stomach works more efficiently as well.

They stimulate your brain causing it to become active which will take longer for you to settle down and be able to sleep. That's why it's 'better' to relax and do nothing for the hour before you sleep.

That and all those devices have screens and screen are just lights pointed at your face.

True, I find it hard to fall asleep after using screens. So just don't use this at least an hour before going to sleep? Oki

Sleeping doesnt make you lose weight...it just makes you less tired so you're less likely to eat junk food for energy

I think it does make you lose weight, I mean you still eat, even if it's before sleeping... and sleeping earlier.
And some people don't eat junk food at all, including me :)
