I've always had issues with sleep on and off but it's getting a lot worse. I have trouble falling asleep, mainly because of racing thoughts and even when I'm completely relaxed it takes forever to fall asleep. I wake up at least twice a night usually and it takes forever to fall back asleep. I'll often wake up thrashing around, or in sleep paralysis. Like, very early this morning I'd wake up every few minutes unable to move, I'd stay awake long enough to get moving again and go back to sleep but wake up ten minutes later in sleep paralysis again.
What's up with that? Anyone else have those same issues? If so, what helps?

I would see a GP about sleeping issues but for just some general advice, taking melatonin is good, exercise before sleeping (Not right before, a good hour before) and some relaxing music or sounds are good for actually falling asleep. For the thrashing or paralysis I can't really give advice sorry :(
I have sleep issues and narcolepsy so my own sleeping patterns are pretty hectic, it lets me relate to how shitty sleeping issues can be. Good luck in getting some better answers.

I second Complicated's advice about exercise. I used to have insomnia in high school because I was constantly worried about all the work that I had to do plus many other personal issues that I was so anxious about fixing. Now that I exercise regularly I find that I fall asleep much quicker and don't have nights where I raid the fridge or use the laptop till 4am in the morning. One thing my boyfriend told me that really helped is that you can always continue whatever is you are doing tomorrow. So sleep on regular hours if you can and no matter how tempting it is don't use any electronic devices after lights out. the flash from the screen tricks your brain into thinking that its day and makes it mh more difficult for you to sleep.

As people have said excersise is a good one but also plenty of fresh air is also good to have before bed or even whilst sleeping if you are like me and not someone that gets cold too easily then pop your window ajar on a night. I've had the racing thoughts thing you have and I still sometimes get that now but that's all down to an over active mind on an evening I think. I really hope you find a solution for it all and all the best luck with it :)

I would suggest to Some general advice, for sleep better
Don't ever take the sleeping pills routine
Try eating a light meal or a smaller portioned meal at dinner time.
Try to avoid watching television in bed
DON'T go to bed unless you're tired
Do not do exercise straight before bed as this also stimulates the body
Don't have a ticking clock in your room.

Satan
I have sleep problems and went to the doctor recently about this: this is what he said:
- Don't have your phone, tablet, laptop in your room under any circumstance!!
- Don't do work in your bedroom. If you do, your mind thinks you are in there to do work, not to sleep. If you are only in your room when you go to bed, that is better.
- Don't do any device work an hour before bed. Read a book, it relaxes the mind.
- Don't drink caffeine, ideally not after mid-afternoon.
- Don't eat much just before going to bed, this will make your digestion system busy and less likely to get to bed.
- Wear eye-masks and ear-buds to prevent any light or noise.
- Make sure your bedroom is not too hot or too cold. It should be around 18-19celcius (around 65f i believe)
Hope this helps :)

I'd see a doctor, but I agree with (A) Melitonin shortly before bed and (B) excercise an hour or so before Melitonin.
