Just wanted to start a thread where we could discuss about music and share tips on how to improve skills and stuff like that. Don't worry about saying something that is 'too basic' or anything like that, you might be able to help someone who's just starting out or trigger something to help someone out of a plateau, etc.

So, I'll start.

Usually because I have so little free time I just bash my way through songs on the guitar whenever I get the chance. But I finally took the time to write down the notes of each guitar string, and the subsequent notes that would be produced on each fret. Then I drew out chord charts using the note chart. I'm sure you can print the info for yourself online, but penning it down really helped me internalise the info and my practise this weekend was much smoother than before.

For beginners to piano, you shouldn't be afraid to write the keys on the keyboard, after awhile you can start doing it by muscle memory but easing yourself into it can help you in the short-term.

Playing every day is important, no matter what instrument you play. If I play guitar every day I can feel and notice the difference from if I miss a few days and pick it back up. Being consistent is a big part of it.

If you're hoping to play live someday, be sure to get some practice standing when it comes to guitar. Surprising the difference between sitting and standing when playing guitar.

If you want to learn to sing while playing guitar, try watching TV while playing the guitar part. I recently started doing this, and it tremendously helped.

So true. When I first started playing while standing I felt really awkward, and kept feeling like the hand/arm I was making chords with needed to rest on something. It took some getting used to.

I am a percussionist, I've been playing drums for the past few years, I mostly play metal but I am always willing to challenge myself with different types of music. My advice is: Have a moment to have fun every so often, but be sure to stay consistent in your practice. i.e. I may practice singles and doubles for an hour then jam out to songs for the next half-hour.
