A former middle school teacher is behind bars Friday, charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Deputies say 52-year-old Daniel Mattingly used cocaine in his College View Middle School classroom while students were present. Friday morning Mattingly turned himself into the Daviess County Sheriff's Office.
Lt. Bill Thompson says, "The commonwealth attorney's office did in fact issue a warrant for Mr. Mattingly, for possession of a controlled substance first degree, to witt cocaine. An arrest warrant was served on Mr. Mattingly a short while ago, and he was transported from here to the Daviess County Detention Center."
In an interview with 14 News Thursday, Tom Shelton, the Daviess County schools superintendent said the alleged activity came to light when students approached school staff about Mattingly.
Some parents 14 News talked to said they'd rather not comment on Mattingly's situation. Others said the alleged activity is inappropriate.
Parent 1: "I don't like it, I don't think he should have been teaching."
parent 2: "I don't approve of drugs and I especially don't want my students, you know, my own children to have anything to do with it."
Lieutenant Bill Thompson says a warrant was issued once lab results of substances recovered during an investigation came back. Thompson says, "Because of the seriousness of the crime and the accusations I wanted to make sure in fact that it was a controlled substance and the lab verified in fact it was."
Mattingly remains at the Daviess County Detention Center. His bond is set at $10,000 dollars. Previously: A shocking drug investigation involves a former teacher. It's alleged the former middle school teacher used illegal drugs while teaching, and it was a student who apparently got the investigation rolling.
Daniel Mattingly, a former teacher at College View Middle School could face criminal charges for allegedly using cocaine in his classroom, with students present.
Lt. Bill Thompson says, "He was continuing to go into a closet, and felt like he was doing something inappropriate in the closet himself."
The Daviess County school superintendent tells 14 News the situation came to light after a student told school staff.
Tom Shelton, Daviess County school district, says, "That type of behavior from a student or staff member in any of our buildings would never be tolerated. We just appreciate the students feeling comfortable enough to share with us. We always hope that the people that are working with our children are not involved in any type of inappropriate activity."
Lieutenant Bill Thompson with the Daviess County Sheriff's Office says an investigation has turned up traces of a controlled substance that were recovered from Mattingly's classroom.
Thompson says, "lab results have been returned now and in fact it was identified as cocaine. I've taken all that information to the commonwealth attorney's office and very soon I would think the decision would be made from him as to what charges would be forthcoming against this particular teacher."
No charges have been filed.

When I found out he got busted I thought it was odd but I just didn`t care. Looking back now I knew he was high all the time because he would pass out in his chair and he threw my friends book. But all in all, the whole eighth grade just laughed when the newspaper said he got busted for snow.
