View Full Version : Pressured To Follow The "Trend"

I'm sure many of you know brands like A&F, Hollister, Aeropostale and all that stuff. I myself own several Hollister shirts and recently purchased some more off the internet. I later did some research on A&F and Hollister and realized they were pretty controversial brands. Most comments I heard were most people who wear Hollister are people who aren't themselves and pretend to be someone else or snobs who have too much money to spend. I admit, most of the popular kids in my school wear Hollister and sometimes I'm pressured to follow the trend and buy new clothings. I live in a pretty decent area in the city and most people are pretty rich. Most of the outcasts in my school are the people who wear the same clothes everyday or don`t follow the trend. I myself have not so generous parents and most of the nice clothings I have to buy myself or beg my parents to buy for me. I just want to say that image is a huge issue in high school (I`m pretty sure after high school too). When you don`t follow the trend, you get picked on and laughed at. When you do follow the trend, people call you a snob when actually you worked really hard to get what you want. I`m sure there`s people out there with the same problem. Please comment.

I personally never follow any trends, and I have good friends, and people never laugh at me or pick on me. Maybe it's different up in canada. I don't know. Trends are kind of dumb because they give you no room to express yourself.

At the start of every year I buy a bunch of dull shirts with no design on them, two decent sweaters, three pairs of pants, and one pair of shoes. Nothing ever has a blatant logo on it. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

I'm pretty much convinced that anyone making people feel crappy based on clothing brands is making up for lack of personality, dick, intelligence or some combination of the three.

That's just me, though.

wow you hit the nail on the head i coulden`t of said it any better. the same thing happens at our school because 90% of my grade is made up of preps and snobs. And i have noticed that all of those people won`t let any kids who are not pretty, or who's mom drives a ford torus hang out with them. I don`t own any A&E or hollester shirts, (i am a PROUD emo kid) and i am very happy.

I only wear shirts that no one else has. Literally, in the past two years I have never worn a shirt that someone else in my school of 1,600+ people has. I buy all my shirts online from sites no one has ever heard of, and most people admit my shirts are pretty sick [in the good way]. :D Most are either band shirts or shirts with political messages [or a mix of the two]. I never wear anything but a t-shirt and jeans either. In the summer I do wear shorts, and in the winter I do wear a sweater, but yeah...

Trends is just high school crap. Beyond high school it doesn't matter what particular name brand you wear as long as you look decent and dress professionally when its appropriate.

I see nothing wrong wearing those brands if you like them. Before I got really tall, I wore some stuff from American Eagle and A&F because I liked some of their clothes and the quality was really good.

I honestly never have witnessed in my four years of high school people teasing others for not wearing this certain brand. No one really cared and that's how it should be. Wear what you like, whether its the trend or not. Style yourself without worrying what others might think.

Quite f-ing true Ant, quite f-ing true. In my school, as long as a guy doesn't come to school dressed in pink fuzzy pajamas, no one really cares about what other people wear. It really isn't a big deal in my school. If anything I get more [positive] attention than most people who just follow trends, because I choose to be different, to stand out. I really haven't received any negative feedback about the clothes I wear, and I haven't been bullied since 6th grade, nor have I bullied anyone since 7th grade. <- Not sure what that has to do with this topic, but I just mean that I'm not picked on for being different. And Ant, I tried to give you rep but it says I have to spread it around first. Just lettin' ya know. :D

Lots of the popular kids at my school wear "preppy" clothes, clothes from Hollister, Aeropostale, Abercrombie and Fitch. Or the ones who want to be popular wear them. I hate those big store brands. Its not like Im too poor to afford them, I just hate following the trend. I want to be different and orignal. I like wearing sports clothing and just plain clothes. People who buy the preppy clothes are either the populars or the posers (My opinion, theres really no difference) Anyway, its pretty important for your social status if you buy clothes from there.

I personally have like a few American Eagle clothes just because I like them :D Not because people at my school pressure you. In my school no one really cares about what you wear unless you like shave your head bald which my friend did but it was a joke. Sure the preppy kids at my school wear like Aeropostale, Abercrombie, and Hollister but doesn't really change who they are cause they had those clothes BEFORE the whole clique thing. I wouldn't consider myself anywhere close to preppy.

I completely agree with you, happytimes

I like to have nice clothes because it just makes me feel better about myself. The clothes are more comfortable, I look better in them, and I'm happier about my image to myself.
But even with that, I still usually wear a white t-shirt and jeans. If I go out and buy fancy clothes, I would've just wasted money in the long run because I'll grow out of them in time, and a Hollister shirt costs $50

When I grow up (and have enough money) I'd like to wear mostly Hollister and Levi's while I'm still young.
I don't get picked on or laughed at, but people wonder why I wear the same look everyday. It's because I really don't have enough money for clothes that fit and look really nice. I wear nicer things occasionally but whatever.

anyway it doesn't really bother me too much right now, and I'd rather have nicer things before nicer clothes

I noticed that people always put Abercrombie and preppiness together but no one ever says American Eagle :D As far as I see it this is how it goes on price range
Abercrombie
Hollister
American Eagle
Aeropostale

But no one ever says AE which in my opinion is good cause its like the "midle" thing like the xbox 360.

I wear Hollister, American Eagle, and Abrecrombie. I don't follow a trend, I just like their clothes. And I'm called a snob, but not entirely for what I wear.
