I'm going to college next week, I am going to buy a laptop and I really want a apple laptop. I don't know which to get, I know they are pretty expensive. Do you guys recommend anything? Not the new ones that just came out tho because those are around $1k and I'm not trying to spend that much. Please leave me some suggestions:)

What are your guys thoughts on these two laptops? Which is better and why?

MOD NOTE: Two similar threads have been merged into one discussion. ~R.D.

$1K for a Mac... It's nothing. I paid mine 1 300$.
But I recommend you a MacBook Pro, Air ones are really light (in power).

I really don't want to spend $1k on a laptop. Do they have any for like $600?

Lol, no. Apple make very expensive products. You will have no computer below $1K.

It depends on what you're going to use it for. Apple is good if you want something simple, Windows is good if you want something more complex. If you want something to relax with and listen to music and stuff, go with Apple. If you want to play games or do work, go with Windows. I personally prefer Windows.

I'm going to use it for college. Writing papers, doing reasearch. And stuff like that. I've always loved Apple, I only had iPhones. I like the MacBooks, but not the prices lol

Personally, I think both are pretty good at doing this. If I were you, I think it would be smart to get the Surface 3 since it comes with a full office suite and it is very portable, yet powerful. You could take it with you to college.

Apple computers are not badass power titans but as laptops there are pretty good (awesome battery, light weight, etc) and OS X is a wonderful operating system. In fact I would never return on Windows except for games and other softwares only available on it, which I do, via a pirated version. :p

It's definitely cheaper than an apple computer. I looked it up and it ranges between $500-about $900 maybe 1000

In that case, I'd say go with something Apple. That's just me though.

windows without a doubt. you get twice the power for the same price (apples are overpriced as hell) you get most softwares directly supported and you dont have to be limited by all the propritetary bullshit apple is doing with their products (like putting a plastic piece inside usb ports so you can only use apple devices, i hate this stupid things)

if i manage to read between your curse words i assume you mean the plastic part the pins are laying on. Im talking about the vertical plastic piece they put inside and then release male usbs with a dent in the middle so only they can fit, but whatevs

I never saw such a thing on my Apple computers, or at least there's never been something that stopped me to use any male cable.

Apple= Good for rich people who want something overly simple

Windows= Good for poor people who want any laptop they can afford

Any laptop with battery life is what you'll need. As a uni student once you're in a lecture all you really care about is the laptop noise (I have a gaming laptop so I no longer take it with me to lectures, sometimes the fan would go so loud and create a disturbance in a hall with 200 people in it) and the battery. I'd recommend Apple for uni if you have a lot of money and want something to last all the years, or getting a Windows laptop that has been known to have excellent battery life and released this year so it supports most of the Windows 10 features. Either Operating system is good, but the battery life on Apple laptops are far superior. Is it worth the money for the extra battery life? Well, probably not. Oh, and having an Apple macbook makes it a target for thieves.

I am using a windows laptop since its easier to use, cheap in price $300-1000 depends on your situation and the applications are easier to access since most are free and others are paid for at a cheap price and also durable. I prefer to use windows 10 its very soft and flexible more than other windows versions

Yep.
And Windows also usually costs less.
Apple only makes money off of people too stupid to see that they aren't worth it.

There's no reason to get a Mac over a Windows if you're looking for functionality, the only positives Macs have imo are being sleek and pretty quiet and not as bulky, but is that really worth $1000 for less features than a $600 Windows laptop? Probs not
My laptop cost £500 and probably has 4x the specs of a Mac lmao

Whoa you've got Windows 10 already? The experimental version?

As for OP like a lot of users, I would also suggest you buy a windows laptop

seconding or thirding the Surface, those are actual computers for the comparable price of a giant iPod (the iPad). they're really nice and fun to use

You could always look into used Apple laptops. Apple laptops tend to hold their value as they age. (Windows laptops' value depreciates faster than Macs (In My Opinion) If you want a new computer, get a Windows. You can get a decent, mid-range laptop for $600 and also don't forget you can get an EDU discount depending on your college.

It has been close to a month since this thread was started so I hope you found a laptop!

Windows have much better compatibility! Please don't get any Apple product becuase all you're buying is the operation system...their machines are nothing!

I completely disagree with this!
The Apple machines are really attractive from my point of view: both inside and on the outside too! Being an owner of both Windows / Apple laptops, I prefer each in their own different ways.

Ok I'll give you the fact that they do look nice but, from my experience, you can get a more powerful machine for cheaper plus windows has greater compatibility! It just comes down to preference!

If you just need for essays go for Linux operating system customized to you on a Windows machine.

(There are a lot of different versions of linux so you have to find which kind of operating system fits you best)

---

From experience I noticed that PCs slow down and have a lot of updates to do for and it's anti-viral software can be a pain to keep updating and it may detect some things as viruses when they aren't.

Apple is expensive but their very high quality machines and I think they last longer than PC's. The only thing is you need to replace the battery if you go through a lot of charge cycles with it every 3-4 years.

But they're also quieter like someone else said.

I do recommend getting an apple laptop through and take that care of that computer so you get your money out of it long term. (Aka take the high cost upfront, and divide the number of days you own it as a useable product to you by the original price you paid).

PC's, you have to buy one once every 2 years, and it starts out fast but the processing power slows badly over time, I was told this is due to junk code kinda replicating itself wastefully under the tech layer of the operating system.

---

For mac's I would chase a 2014-2015 refurbished MacBook Pro with a solid state drive.

Or a Lenovo PC if you want to go that route.
