Stretch stretch stretch! I can not exaggerate this More! A nice shower always work... If you can... Ice baths and plenty of water.... Take it from me... Track practice, cross country, football and karate practice all in one day, every day

Stretch before and after. Plus do a warm up. :) after a little while you won't notice the pain anymore

Agreed on the stretching. I have been working out longer than normal and when stretching doesn't help anymore, I just wait it a day and repeat the workout. The first 10-15 flexions are hell but the pain in gone right after :)

stretching is very important. there are lots of good stretch routines online
a shower helps me
believe it or not, I have had a friend tell me after a workout it can be good to drink chocolate milk. it works kind of like a protein drink in helping to build your muscles.
but staying hydrated, before, curing, and after with water or some type of sports drink is very helpful

I remember when I first started XC and my coach would always say "Lots of water, lots of stretching" non stop. To this day I thank her for it because if I did not follow those simple instructions, I would have been injured so many times. So just keep hydrating and stretching. Don't over stretch, take it easy as your body needs to become familiar with the recent changes.

how soon after working out do you have to take a shower for it to work?

As soon as possible. Start with hot water and gradually turn it to cold until you can't anymore. At the latest, take it within 45min after working out

After the pool? I guess you could forget about that one if you really needed to. Two showers in 2h sounds like a lot lol

In addition to stretching nutrition is also hugely important - I also drink milk and when I can I have a casein protein shake too to help with the recovery.

the shower before you get into the pool is just a quick one to rinse off

what's the best food to eat for that?

Protein of all kinds
protein shakes after workout
chocolate milk at night
drink water constantly (about 24fl oz extra for every lb of sweat lost)
stretch before and after
roll out muscles on a foam tube roller

In addition to the list above, good clean proteins like eggs, chicken breast etc. are good choices. Milk is a big one for me because its quickly absorbed as a protein - a casein protein shake is basically the protein extracted from milk that takes a really long time (couple of hours) to be processed by your body so its a sustained release - most people I know who take casein protein take it before going to bed.

On the other hand drinking a whey protein shake is best right after a workout and is absorbed quickly by your body in the recovery process.

You definetly need to strectch to get rid of any lactic acid which isn't good for your body at all, i'm not keen on hot water baths but i know from experience if you invest in a box of Radox muscle soak from boots or somewhere ( this is in England by the way) for about £1.59 i think it is; a couple of handfulls off the powder in the bath really helps greatly. Ice water baths are also good but breathtaking they also have some good health benefits as well which is a added plus.

Follow this link which will discuss the benefits
