Because you were good friends right?
It's kinda like a grieving process I think.... I've been through both, from death and from moving myself, it completely sucks in both cases
It's like losing your best friend and feels like forever, but even though it feels like forever, it may not be, ya never know, so I'd tr to keep in touch, Facebook, VT, email what ever..
If ur good friends, you should be able to continue in a friendship from afar

He had probably become a regular part of your life and now that he's not here there is a void without him. You are missing a piece of your life. It's human nature to move on, though, to "replace" him either with another friend or some activity. The good news is you can still keep in touch with him and maintain some sort of friendship with him.

he was a good friend and an important part of your life, it is very natural to be missing him

I know how you feel. I move to Canada alone to study and left all my friends behind. It is hard to see a good friend to go but you can always talk to him through social media. As time pass, you will eventually find new friends. It is all about how long it take you to heal and find some one special in your life again. I still miss my friends who I grow up with but I have met new friends and this is friendship. It is not about the connection or contact. It is about the memory you two have created and shared.

It sucks when someone (or you) have to move. I've been in the situation 3 times and it really is no fun the we first year, but once you start making new friends yet still keep in touch stuff gets a lot better. Just keep talking and don't loose contact for too long, because when you do you it just goes downhill, until you eventually do not talk to them.

It's natural to miss a person whom you've been (really) good friends with...
Do you still keep in contact with him perhaps by FaceTime/Skype/phone?
Distance shouldn't break friendships.
