I'm thinking about joining the Cross Country team this year. However, I would be a newbie as a Senior. All the other girls are really fast and competitive, they've been running for years. I think I'm going to do it but I don't want to fall behind during practices/ not be competitive during actual races.
My fastest mile is 7min 55 sec and my fastest 5k is 33min.

Go for it. Don't let anyone else stop you from doing something you want to do. Everybody has to start somewhere. The only way you can get better is by doing it more. :)

Here's my advice: make some friends on that are on the team and that have been doing it for a while. You could ask that they coach you and stuff to try and help you get better.
I think it's a great idea. I've considered joining XC before myself, but I can't run for very long without getting incredibly winded and unable to go on, unfortunately.

I think you should! The coaches will definitely help you improve in areas if you want to become a better runner/be more competitive, and there's no doubt the team as a whole will respect the hell out of you if you do this with the purpose of staying in shape. My knowledge of XC is, admittedly, limited, but from what I know about Track Events, the coaches pick athletes to send to the meets, so if you're not comfortable competing, I wouldn't worry about it.

Go for it! I am in XC (Freshman in August) and am not the fastest runner. I know seeing the varsity runners zoom past logging mile after mile makes you think that being a part of the team is worthless because who would want to train with someone who can't keep up with the group? I've had many thoughts of quitting but I still am attending the camp right now (in fact I have to leave in 10 minutes haha). Just know that there are coaches there for a reason. To help you. No matter how poor of a runner you may think you are, you aren't. You have the same potential as everyone else. Sure you may need to train more so you can be ready for the season, but at least you'll be better than if you decided to not try at all. Long story short: Do it. You'll thank yourself later. And you'll also consider quitting after every step but just don't, okay. It is all worth it.
Also don't feel discouraged, you should try and get the minutes in which will eventually lead to more miles and then faster splits. I think my fastest mile was 7:15 or 7:30 and I have yet to run a 5k. (I've done more than 3 miles at practice, but not without usual walk breaks, change of path, re-tying shoes, etc.)

You should go for it, do it for you, not for the other girls. That's a good mile/5k time :) Even if you don't win every race I'm sure you'll improve over the season and could find that you want to continue doing it on your own after you're done with school.
