I use either aveeno or soap, although I'm not sure that's the proper way to do it safely so don't listen to that advice :P. I use my fingers. I think it's a great thing to do once in a while since it feels so good, but you have to be careful not to hurt yourself doing it.

I stared about 4 months ago, and have still only done it about 5 times.

I used Vaseline as lube, or lotion.

I've used my fingers mostly and the end of a toothbrush once. Both were good but I felt like I could touch more with my fingers, but it's also more messy.
