Hi people. So my whole life I have never gone shirtless, unless maybe when I was <5. I always where a shirt when I swim, when I'm outside and to bed. The only time I don't is in the shower. Now, some of my friends are bugging me about it and they say I should go shirtless sometimes cause it feels good and is freeing. People say sleeping shirtless is comfortable and healthier. I want to try going shirtless at night or with friends but in worried that my family will question me or think I'm weird. My parents, brother and sister haven't seen me shirtless in over 10 years. What should I do? Thanks!

Do you know a reason why you don't go shirtless?
Is it a lack of self confidence? Any flaws you think you might have?
To be honest I never saw a guy swimming with his t-shirt on.

Why would your family think its weird? Most men go shirtless when swimming and some do at night. It's not like you have anything they haven't seen before there.
Do what you want and don't let your friends pressure you into doing something you don't want to.

I have gone shirtless all my life. I sleep nude. I play sports so am around naked guys a lot so being shirtless is no big deal for me. However, if wearing a shirt is your preference that is ok. Don't be pressured into doing something that makes you uncomfortable.

no one will think it is weird to sleep shirtless. the majority of guys do, it is way more comfortable. start by being shirtless alone, sleeping and in your room, then work your way up. when your at the beach and it is already normal to be shirtless and then if your in a situation where your friends are shirtless or you just want to be and it is acceptable, go for it

The only time I refused to go shirtless was when I was younger and I was ashamed of by body. I also hate being shirtless sleeping, I'd just freeze. I don't think your family would mind much, going shirtless isn't a big dramatic ordeal. I'd say just try it, and see what you like.

This is hard for me to visualize.... a guy that never takes his shirt off? I've never seen a guy swim with a shirt on at the pool. At the beach, all the time. I'd encourage you to try it. Not just for the feel it gives you, but for health. Exposure of skin to sun and air is good for you.
If you are self conscious, start by doing it where your family wont see. At the beach or in the woods, or wherever it is you go. Alone or with friends... or with strangers. Remember, strangers dont know you and you wont see them at school. Random strangers are kind of like people online... its anonymous. Or even in your room. Get used to the feeling, then gradually get into being that way around people.
On the other hand, for some people its easier to dive in than to wade in. If you're one of those, just get brave and get the first time over with, and then it will be easy the second time.
Edit to add: Hey, if you do decide to get brave and let your family actually see you... it would be awesome to hear how you felt, what happened inside your head, at the time. And writing it out might actually help you understand it too.

I used to never take my shirt off in front of my family. I did in front of my friends, but not my parents becausse I was self-conscience about my body. I was overweight (not that overweight, just flabby lol) and didn't want my parents to see me that way. I then lost over 30 pounds and no longer feel embarrassed to be shirtless.

go shirtless and if anyone asks you why the sudden change, you let them know that your body and ways of thinking have changed and you want to try something new.

Wow guys. Thanks so much for the kind advise. It really means a lot. I think I'll maybe just do it slowly due to my judgmental family. Thanks you all very much for your responses. Greatly appreciated:-)

I had a similar issue for a long time, I was super self conscious about my body. I swam with a shirt on or just never went in. But at some point a few years ago, the switch flipped and now I couldn't care less....most of the time. Now I still feel odd about being shirtless around family, unless we are at a beach or something like that. There is nothing odd about being shirtless. I never sleep with a shirt on, just do it and no one will think twice.

Like most r sayin, don't do somethin u don't want to do, but, if ya don't try it, U will never know how it feels, and ya might like it
Everyone's different, and just so u know, I've seen other guys at the beach n stuff wearing a shirt, didn't think anything of it, their choice, at friends house sleeping, some wear a tshirt, some don't, don't make any difference, I sleep naked, it no differtm than sleepin with pj's or boxers.... just different is all

I agree with the above - your family won't think it's weird, they'll know its just you growing up, in my case I used to wear briefs until I asked to switch to boxer briefs when I was around 11 or 12 so - they were curious and asked "really, ok?" and that was it, no more questions asked, now its totally normal.

i used to be always shirtless when I had my amazing skinny bod....but after putting on some and getting a skinny-fat body with a little tummy roll and tiny mboobs I got super self-consious...I'd take my pants off but get to water in my undie/swim short + vest...
.But recently after a few beers I was brave enough to take my top off and jump to water just in my briefs...well few of my friends laughd at my body and poked my tummy...but that was all.. no group laughs...and guess what..they are as out of shape as I am.......so now I'm not gonna keep my top on in water any more......

I used to not care what others thought back when i was like 11 or 12 but i was short and really fat, I had giant man boobs and a beer like belly. But then when I was like 14-15 i lost almost all of it but I barely had anything and I was so self concious. Now i have like only muscle and a tiny bit(im like 13% body fat) and im getting to confidence back now. I can show my self shirtless at home, pool, but sometimes i still feel a bit worried but thats no biggy cause what im doing is weightlifting so i can get more muscle and lose my remaining bit(I want to be like 8-9% body fat)

Self confidence is in ur head...not in ur body...Today fw of us are going out...Its warm outside...so on our way we'll be shirtless in the car itself...I'm not going to stick to my undershirt today....They will all take pants off and jump to sea...I'll have only my white briefs on...same as the other lot.....we'll all hang out for our bodies and undies to dry....few might comment on how skinny I used to be and pat my tummy...I'd just laugh 'em off....IF my body is good for me what is it for others...
Of course there will be loads of junk food and beer...I'm not gonna deprive myself...I dieted 2 years and 20kg ago..my skinny-kid days....I'm skinny-fat (as my sis puts it) going on chubby and I am proud of my body.!!!!

i wouldnt really say that it is a problem it is just who u r, i do go shirtless i do feel comfortable as long as you change your shirts frequently i dont see any problem. If you dont feel comfortable shitless wear the shirt. But is there something that makes you wear a shirt all the time? Do you like your body? Do you like who u r? Do you feel like you get judged? Just dont orry about it mate.

Your family won't find it weird. There's nothing wrong with going shirtless. I do it pretty much all the time at home. I sleep naked so being shirtless in bed is normal for me. I recommend it, I love the freedom of it. The thought of wearing clothes to bed makes me feel claustrophobic

Why would you feel uncomfortable without your shirt? I enjoy being naked at home, and it feels really nice. If you feel uncomfortable being naked, then it's still understandable. But why would you refuse to take off your shirt?

Simple, do what you want and don't worry about how others choose to perceive you. Don't waste time conforming to silly ideas that don't matter.

summer is a good time to start trying it, your reason is, it's warm/hot and nobody can disagree. as paletanner says, sleeping shirtless, or nude, is more comfortable. be confident, the world is full of people like us, "perfect" bodies are the vast minority
