View Full Version : Supreme Court rules states must allow same-sex marriage

Washington (CNN)—In a landmark opinion, the Supreme Court ruled Friday that states cannot ban same-sex marriage, handing gay rights advocates their biggest victory yet.

The 5-4 ruling had Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority, with the four liberal justices. Each of the four conservative justices wrote their own dissent.

The relevant cases were argued earlier this year. Attorney John Bursch, serving as Michigan's Special Assistant Attorney General, defended four states' bans on gay marriage before the Court, arguing that the case was not about how to define marriage, but rather about who gets to decide the question.

The case comes before the Supreme Court after several lower courts have overturned state bans on gay marriage. A federal appeals court had previously ruled in favor of the state bans, with Judge Jeffrey Sutton of the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals writing a majority opinion in line with the rationale that the issue should be decided through the political process, not the courts.

Fourteen couples and two widowers challenged the bans. Attorneys Mary Bonauto and Doug Hallward-Driemeier presented their case before the Court, arguing that the freedom to marry is a fundamental right for all people and should not be left to popular vote.

I'm honestly not affected by this. It's just an oh ok for me. Nothing's changing in my life.

I think everyone knew it was going to happen, eventually. Such is the power of democracy. If the people want something bad enough, they're eventually going to get it.

But hey. Now men can marry men. It's a big change, but I suppose we'll have to get used to it whether we like it or not.

Edit: The moment I heard of this I went straight to VT and posted the above in mobile. While this is amazing in every single way possible, I can't imagine how some people may be feeling after such a great news! Seriously, I have no idea how amazing of a news this can be to you guys but I'm really sharing the feeling!

The South(which is majority Republican/Conservative) is in a uproar over this..Also, the most of the states that had bans on same sex marriage were of course, majority Republican/Conservative states such as Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama.

I saw a statistic on TV today, 67% of Republicans oppose same sex marriage.

I'm not even from the U.S. but I'm super happy they finally legalized gay marriage, nationwide.

The supreme court also said that it'll be known as marriage not "gay/same-sex marriage" so that's neat. Haha.

Cheers to all! :D

There's a difference between being opposed to gay marriage and being a homophobe. I don't think that many Republicans care most of the people who are opposed are just going on with their lives this doesn't mean anything to them.

This is literally how everyone should feel about it, if they aren't gonna be getting married to the same sex. I don't understand why there is such opposition when it doesn't affect anyone's lives in the slightest except from the people who will be engaging in this new marriage equality.

didn't read the thread, didn't need to ("ugh better late than never, welcome to the 21st century America like really" in a nutshell) but I was actually hoping this would pass soon just so I can watch all of my predictions come true. so it begins!

one wonders, with this long coveted (but largely symbolic) victory, will the LGBTSJW crew settle down into enjoying the oh-so-happy marriages that they've been cruelly deprived of by bigots for so long? will they ditch the meth, stop jerking each other off at pride parades & start being normal, productive citizens? fuck no, it's on to shrieking even more shrilly for the next social justice token du jour and being even more crass and tasteless about it. trannies are so last week, I think it's "pedos deserve rights too" now. whatever, point is that's the culture war for ya, only winning move is not to play

in the real world, our society is still in decline and is continuing to do so. Americans are still becoming more and more alienated from each other with each passing day. wealth & power consolidation continues along with overpopulation, overconsumption, and omnipresent greed. millennials will be shocked to discover just how meaningless their rights are once The Decline reaches the terminal stage and the shit flood finally reaches their front door. those crafty bigots!

cheering for this victory is like being excited that you got a brand new set of keys (rights) to an old rusted up clunker that burns oil and is going to die on you any day (our country). good for you I guess?

I am both happy and apathetic about this. (is that the right word... for just dont care?)

I am really happy that people have the right to be who they are. A lot of people want this right, even a lot of people here on VT will want it some day, and I am happy for them, that they can feel a bit more accepted. And that they can make legal what they've always lived anyway.

For myself, personally, its unimportant. It wont change who I am. I am not an activist, I don't go to gay pride, I don't wave flags. I am just me, and I don't want labels even though I have them. I want a society where gay, bi, or straight are all just mainstream things and no one gets excited about any part of it. A society where people don't "come out" because there is no reason to, where you don't hear "the first openly gay.. whatever" because it really doesn't matter and no one cares. If this is a step in that direction, then I am really happy for it. I just don't understand if it is or not.

I admit that I do not try to visualize the future. And that my views may change over time. But I only know and feel what I know and feel today. Which is, while this is a very cool thing, and I am happy for the people who wanted it, it doesnt really change much.

are you actually comparing homosexuality to pedophilia.

That's actually very common form of counter logic people against same sex marriage use.

They argue it's now a slippery-slope and that all marriage is defined now is via mutual consent.

I think they're wrong and that minors, (unless their genius prodigies who really understand life's financial and relationship stressors) won't get marriage licenses anyway.

I think it's a red herring fallacy counter argument.

according to y'all my argument here is "goddamn it they legalized it now we're all screwed." nope, my point was that we were already screwed and a bit of symbolic legal gesturing isn't going to do anything. I don't care about gay marriage itself, I only care about it being given vastly overblown importance by shallow millennials whose society is about to go off a cliff. go back and read what I wrote about wealth & power consolidation and where that will lead us. in other words, get some perspective

and yes, the SJW-Left will do exactly as I predict as they have already done in some places like Sweden. it helps to have eyes that are willing to see, though.

Gay people are waste of the world, humanity wasn't made to a man can fuck another, there should be no rights for them, only prison.
I really hope our next president will not allow again gays to be married.

It matters.

But like anybody with a brain understands the bigger issue is the country's growing wealth gap, in the context of a lame duck Congress after lame duck Congress stuck in grid-lock, and anti-science positions.

What do you want us to do about it, congress had the lowest approval ratings ever and it's not having any affect on them as a body, individuals in the house and senate are good but it's not enough.

---

Also nobody is going legalize pedophilia now or even centuries from now within our country for 2 main reasons.

1. When the topic is mention everyone envisions themselves as a kid getting abused by some older freak. Legalizing that does not yield any sense of good to a person if they theoretically wanted to argue for legalizing it. Everyone's like kids are safe where they are.

2. Kids are already covered under their guardian and parents healthcare, so there is not side-reasons that legalizing pedophilia would do for anybody that makes sense. (Whereas gay marriage had all these logistical legal issues about recognition and categorization regarding inheritance rights, marriage rights, healthcare coverage plan stuff.
