I'm not sure if this is the right section, so I'm sorry if it should be somewhere else!

I was wondering how much sleep a 16 (almost 17) year old boy should be getting?

I currently can only sleep for around 6 1/2 to 7 hours (I physically cannot stay asleep for any longer), but it's leaving me really tired by about 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Therefore I was wondering how much sleep you get, and whether it is worth me speaking to my doctor about it next time I go in?

Thank you!

You're the same age as me and we should be getting atleast 8-9 hours of sleep.

I feel your pain, I'm 16 and usually can't sleep for more than 7 hours. It's recommended that teenagers get 8-9 hours of sleep a night. If you are unable to sleep for this long and its effecting you negatively, I would recommend that you go and see your family doctor

I don't think there is a norm. Most people seem to think 8 hours plus when you are in puberty. But it varies. When I was in this real fast growth spurt, I slept like 10-11 hours and ate everything in sight. But most of time, I sleep about 7 hours. Sometimes less. Occasionally more. A lot more when I am in a depression episode.

So, I think you sleep whatever your body wants you to sleep. And when it wakes up, don't just lay in bed, get up and get some activity so that it will get tired enough to sleep again.

Thanks for all your answers - it's good to see that it varies so much between people, so makes it seem a bit less abnormal than I though

Hahaha everyone says get at least 8 hours I don't think that's true for most teens including me lol. I'd say 8 hours is the ideal time you need, but if you can sleep with less and still function during the days then you're good. Otherwise talking to a sleep specialist might be a good idea.

The body needs 8 hrs sleep per night, but I go with 9-10 as it takes one hour to get to Rem sleep.

I hate sleeping. It's a complete waste of time so I only sleep for about 4-6 hours a night.

At our age, it's recommended not to sleep less than 8 hours. However, every body is different and it's important to "listen" our body.

Now, if you sleep 7 hours per day and you feel ok, plenty of energy, awake, etc that's all right. However, if during the day you are tired it means that you need to sleep extra time. So, you can sleep during night a bit more or take during the afternoon a short brake to sleep at least 30 min.

On school nights I don't get much sleep at all. I have FOMO so bad that I stay up really late. On weekends or the summer its not as bad because i can sleep until like noon or 1

Teens are supposed to get 8-10 hrs of sleep a day. Of course that dont happen during school because of a lot of homework lol

Ideally teenagers are meant to get around 7-8.5 hours of sleep.
I've had friends who would get just under 7 and feel heaps tired, whereas I get around 5-6 hours of sleep (if that) on an average school night and feel fine. It depends on your sleeping pattern, though its always good to get more.

It depends for me. I know that research and doctors all say that teenagers should get 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night. But for me on school nights or nights where I'm out partying sometimes I only get 3 or 4. Yet other nights when I have nothing going on I can sleep for 12 hours straight. I can tell though when I haven't gotten enough sleep, so really just listen to your body. If you wake up and you still feel tired it means that you either have not gotten enough sleep, or that the quality of your sleep was not good. So just figure out which sleep patterns work best based on your activities and life, and try to find the best balance between time spent sleeping and how good of a rest you are getting.
