so I've got a pair of Radeon HD 7870s in CrossFire. for almost a year I was having constant issues with them in games - lag spikes, low framerates, even crashing. for a game to even be *somewhat* playable I had to run it in windowed mode at 1366*768. it got to the point where I stopped gaming because it was so frustrating, I almost threw these cards up on eBay and bought a GTX 970 ffs :lol3:

turns out, the culprit was AMD's shitty Catalyst software. in AMD OverDrive the default performance settings were 300/600 MHz on the GPU core/memory (default speeds are supposed to be 1000/1200 MHz!) and because Catalyst is shit, these are the speeds my cards would top out at whenever I ran a game. facepalm!

all sorted now though. got a nice overclock going (1100/1300 MHz) and I can finally play all of my games on max settings for the first time in a long time! dunno why I didn't think to check this sooner. anyway just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is having similar issues

<3 Catalyst

While not gaming-related, I've seen CCC being pretty useless when it comes to monitor management. Doesn't do shit. Had to use PStrip to solve my issues. (On a HD 3450)

Its well known that AMD video card drivers are utterly useless, I used to use AMD cards, had all sorts of problems, then as soon as I changed to an Nvidia card all my problems magically vanished, AMD Catalyst software is utter wank, always has been.

yeah AMD is shit but every now and then they shit out something that's decent if you scrub all the shit off it first. these cards are pretty sweet now that they're actually working. they max out at ~55°C and are really quiet

I prefer NVIDIA but non-reference NV cards worth a shit are really damn expensive so, yeah

my laptop has NVIDIA GPUs, can't really make a comparison there though
