Hi, I am a pretty big gamer, and at the beginning of the school year, I promised myself that if I got straight As, I would build myself a new gaming rig. I did get straight As, and after some thinking, I have decided to upgrade my gpu to a 970, and buy a gaming laptop, as it would be nice to game on the go. I decided on the Sager NP8278 (it's huge, I know, I will only be using it on flat surfaces). The one setback is my parents. I earned all of the money to buy this computer through tutoring, but they don't let me spend money above $10 or so, unless they approve. I don't want the usual stuff about "exercise", I bike ten miles every morning, "get good grades", I have straight As in a GT program, or "behave", I have a squeaky clean discipline record. How can I convince my parents? Thank you in advance!

point all of those things out, remind them it is your money, and promise you will keep working hard

SethfromMI is right. Also, I have been in a similar boat and find writing what my responsibilities are, what achievements I have made academically and how getting (computer in your case) whatever will not affect my behavior and I will continue to do what is expected of me. You want them to know that if they do let you get it, that you will not become a slacking student, lazy, etc. Good Luck! I am(was) in GT too ;) (was because our GT program merges with PreAP in Freshman year)

It also helps if you have more money (at least half) left over after you theoretically "spend" it on this new computer.
If the entire amount of savings you have now is used up in one go for the computer you want that hurts your argument that your a prudent spender and that you understand the value of money.
Maintain your grades, and also your squeaky clean discipline record.
Then make your pitch like what Seth said.

You can also let them know how having a new computer will benefit you educationally. Telling them that your current computer is slowing down when you're trying to research and study should push them to your side a bit.

Basically you can try and highlight what other people above have said: you earned your own money, you achieved excellent grades, you cycle 10 miles a day, and how it's about time your computer deserves an upgrade, and how it'd benefit you in the long-term in terms of performance.
Hope they'll approve,
Andy

Like someone said before, tell them how it will benefit your studies. When I wanted to get a subscription to photoshop I told my parents it would be helpful for my art course, and now I have photoshop!
