NOT lotion.
Use a lube thats made for sex. The only alternative is vegetable oil from the kitchen.
Lotion might work for a time, but it gets absorbed fast (lube and oil stay on the outside of the skin for a while).
Never vaseline, never soap

You could always go to the drug store and buy actual lube, however, if you're looking for household alternatives I would recommend lotion or aloe Vera gel. However, both will dry up eventually. Just add a little water periodically or keep adding more and more.
