I wanted to know if there are any apps one can download for android that allow for the user to send text messages to those in their phone's contacts.

I've tried a few, but the app ends up assigning itself a phone number in of itself and it can change without notice.

Also the recipient of the message isn't going to recognize who is trying to message them.

So can anybody help me out with referring me to an android app that can text over wi-fi, and not your network carrier?

Maybe some messengers like WhatsApp or Viber?

Using these apps you can text and call people from your countacts if they have the app too. In these apps your phone number is used as your ID

See it requires the other person to have the app.

That's the problem.

I need something that works 100% without requirements on the recipient having the app too or something else.

Uniquemind,

I used this to text and call people on my iPad a while back. Perhaps it could help you out in this situation.

Because of dead zones and limited transportation to get out of a dead zone (on any network) despite having ample wifi connection.

Ah, right. I didn't imagine that being a problem in the U.S.

What you're describing is either

a) Something that doesn't exist or
b) WiFi-texting

There is currently no app that can take care of sending and receiving messages through cellular network because it's the cellular network that sends the messages to the friends phone, rather than the internet.

You're probably thinking of WiFi texting which is provided by your carrier as an alternative to sending messages when signal is limited. In this case I'd check with your carrier to see if it's available for your phone. In the UK here, EE provide WiFi calling which also includes texts. You would also need a phone that supports WiFi calling and texting.

Hi,

Have you tried an app called ChatON from the App Store? Assuming you are from the U.S, it should still work for sending/receiving messages.
I've tried it a few times (before I went iPhone), and I quite liked it.

WeChat, KiK and WhatsApp are the other ones I can think of (which I have also used before).

Hope that helps,
Andy

I use Pinger, and it does its job as a free texting service. Also, maybe you should check out Republic Wireless. They are a recently new phone carrier, and I've been with them for 2 years now. Basically they are big on the philosphy of Hybrid calling and texting. Like once you connect to a wifi network, your phone will transition over to wifi for calling and sms. When you get off of a wifi network or hotspot, it will go over to celluar. That's how they have really afforable plans. Just a recommendation!
