If this is in wrong section please move. Thanks mods

I'm posting this because based on former threads and experiences I believe I've never learned proper hygiene. I was bathed til eight by mom/sitter and thereafter they just let me do it. Judging by how mom always asks me if I wore deodorant after showers, thinks bubble baths are the best for me, and based on how people consider me smelly even after a shower sometimes, I think that's probably the culprit (I also have terrible dandruff even after hair washing and use neutral soap so it supports the theory that I never learned proper hygiene). Therefore tips on pit washing/washing in general (appropriate, non explicit tips por favor) could really help me.

I'm asking you kind people of VTF this as
a. I'm tired of people considering me smelly
b. Maybe this will stop mom asking me questions bout my hygiene.
c. We're a community of teens here to help each other.

Thanks to all who post constructive feedback :)
No thanks to all who try to derail this thread, call me an idiot, or both. :(

For your pits just wash then with soap or shower gel. Just work it in and leave it a bit then wash it out

Any specific time? Cuz what I do is I just dab them a bit and then rinse.

Not really a minute is fine, the longer the better. you could try Shampoo once a week on the hair.
A good deodorant is key, I find the wax or gel one's work better than sprays

Ok, I didn't know taking a shower was complex but apparently I was wrong, Just was every inch of your body with whatever soap you want, natural, synthetic, so on or whatever. pay special attention to your pits and groin, if you have dandruff you can buy anti-dandruff shampoo.

Some people have body odours that result from other factors, not just the lack of/incorrect way of showering. Try consulting a doctor about this?

Also try reading up some things on here: http://www.prevention.com/health/healthy-living/surprising-things-make-you-smell

Thanks, I will. Does my washing technique (quick dab of soap on pits and other areas and rinse) seem O.K. tho do you think?

I personally scrub everywhere with a loofa for a few minutes and then rinse - you don't have to do it for so long, but I have sensitive skin so I have to take extra care for it.

Loofa? And I might try that, but only if it is a case of me smelling if I don't do it, you see. I'm not such a shower fan but I want to improve my hygiene cuz going to spend few days at a girl's place this summer. And don't want her to hate me cuz I smell

Start/end your days with a bath! I use a kitchen sponge while taking a shower so that the hard side really exfoliates my skin, cleaning it more and making it super smooth!

Are they absolutely necessary? They look like washcloths and I dislike washcloths cuz babysitter used em on me during every bath, and they can hurt.
Not really keen to use them again

You don't need to use that specific one, but try to find something soft the if it hurt you - it will benefit you more than just using your hands. Rubbing with your hands doesn't exfoliate as effectively.

Why is exfoliate important?

Why is exfoliate important?

If you don't, dead skin will build up and you will smell. Not only will it build up, it will clog your pores and make your skin look dull and lifeless. (Do not exfoliate too often either, your skin will be irritated).

Exfoliating cleanses away dirt and rejuvenates your skin. I agree with the user a few posts above, I recommend a loofah. I also recommend bar soap for your situation, I find bar soaps a tad bit better than body wash. It makes my skin squeaky clean.

How do you feel about showers? Were you only taught how to take baths?

I'm asking for both showers and baths, sorry should have been clearer.
As for taught: I wasn't actually taught anything. As a kid I just got bathed by sitter and mom. Then I turned 8 and they were just randomly like 'ok, you need to handle cleaning your own body now.' Never actually mentioned how to wash or anything, never let me try under their supervision so I was just going along blindly.

Then puberty hits in which means body odor and mom/people started thinking I smelled as I'd never been told deodorant was useful (just left it in the bathroom) and daily showers were a must. Bubble baths helped cuz of the scents and cuz they cleanse everything while you sit and require no washing skill, but showers not really (mom sent me back in to try again sometimes after I'd showered).

Now I'm making this thread to, like I said, learn how to shower properly so I can stop being the smelly dude and not embarrass myself when I want a job/will be hanging out with a girl at her place for a few days. Therefore all help is GREATLY appreciated

I think you should use a wash cloth and body wash. Like others have said, hands don't really exfoliate the skin as much as a loofah or a wash cloth would.

As for your armpits, you should scrub them with a wash cloth and soap for about 30 seconds each. If it helps, you could consider trimming your armpit hair? Not completely shaving it, but just making it more manageable. Maybe that would stop the sweat sticking to the hair quite often thus causing an even greater smell. The same applies to your down below area.

Make sure you scrub your legs, upper-thigh-kinda-area, and feet too. I feel so awkward typing this out lmao.

Make sure your feet are properly scrubbed with the cloth. After you've finished washing the rest of your body, wash your feet last. Everytime you finish washing a body part, quickly run the wash cloth under water so it gets rid of any stuff on the surface of it.

Word of advice; always wash your face with the wash cloth before you wash your body. This stops the risk of germs from your body going onto your face, which could cause breakouts. When you're finished with the wash cloth, always make sure you lather it in soap, rinse it, and then wring it out so it's always fresh. You should also put the wash cloth in the washing machine at least every 3-7 days. Btw wash cloths are also called flannels :) You should use moisturiser too.

Deodorant is also a must. Spray it for about 2-3 seconds in your armpit (not from a very close distance, but not from a far distance either. About 10cm away from your armpit I guess?). Lynx, Sure, Dove, Sanex, etc. all have very good deodorants. I think all of those brands have ''sensitive'' versions just in case your skin is delicate.

If your face is quite dull or oily, you can use a light facial scrub which will exfoliate your skin and leave it feeling smooth and moisturised. Also use a light facial moisturer. Don't put body moisturiser on your face.

I know it seems like alot, but it's actually very quick to do! I'm sorry that your mum and your sister didn't teach you how to shower yourself; it's quite unusual that they'd do such a thing. After two or three times of doing this, your body will be squeaky clean :) Make sure to do this once or twice a day every day(twice a day whenever you do sport or something that would make you sweat). Also, don't scrub too hard otherwise you might irritate your skin.

When you dry yourself after you've had a shower/wash, make sure to dry yourself completely so you're not damp and no smell lingers.

All you need when you go to shower at someone's sleepover or whatever is just a wash cloth and soap/body wash (and obvious clothing&deodorant&a towel lol).

And finally; http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50262570/ << ikea has a bunch of soft washcloths that are suitable to use in the shower. :)

I apologize for subjecting you to awkwardness, that wasn't my intention in asking for advice. I appreciate that you typed it up tho despite your awkwardness
Your advice is pretty detailed which is helpful so I'll totally use it, thanks a lot! :) I didn't know you needed 30 seconds) on each armpit (I do like 2 or 5, ten at the most I think) so very good to know :)
I just have one minor question: Do non spray deodorants work as that's what I use? Or not really?

Aw no worries, I don't mind the awkwardness as long as I'm helping someone :)

Oh, for the first time you wash your armpits, wash them for 30 seconds each (like a cleansing session I guess) and then the next day(and all the days after that) you can just wash them for 10-15 seconds each.

I personally think that spray works better than the non-spray(by non-spray I mean the roll-on deodorants), but everyone is different so you should try different styles of deodorant and see what you like best :)

I dislike spray because spray generally comes with a lot of scents, and scents rn't my thing. It's one of the reasons I used to fight whenever babysitter (or sis when in babysitter function or when I was goin through puberty) would fill the bath with bubble bath: it'd always be scented (to combat my sweat smell apparently) and I don't really like smelling scented. I shall thus take ur advice and try different styles.

As for the armpits thing, why would 15 seconds work if you'd washed them for 30 seconds the previous time/ Wouldn't they remain smelly? I don't see the logic in it. If you don't feel like, or can't, explain it, it's totally cool; I'm just trying to understand how this works.

And once more, thanks for explaining. Before I never really cared about hygiene and I'm really slow at learning things so might be mom tried to teach it to me and I just never picked up on it. However, I, as stated earlier, am going to stay over with someone for a week ( a girl) whom I kinda like and don't want her to think I'm a soap dodger (which I sorta am) or to pull away from me with that 'ewww, nasty smell!can't breathe!' look which is painful enough to see on the face of a girl you DON'T like :( . Therefore your advice is EXTREMELY appreciated.

Note: just got over a sickness so if any of this is a repeat of reply yesterday, my apologies.

Lice are evil! Had lice 2x in my life; not fun. I get your concern. I shower round midday/night myself

Ah that's fine. I've seen a few non-scented deodorants (they literally just smell like fresh air I guess) so I guess you could try those :)

If the reason you don't like scented body wash is because it usually smells flowery or fruity; there are toiletry brands which have quite a frosty/cologne-y smell if that's what you're after. Sorry that my choice of adjectives are pretty unimaginative lol

Oh the reason why I suggested that you wash for longer the very first time you carry out this routine is because I personally think it's best to thoroughly wash yourself the first time so all of the sweat/bacteria that was building up for the past few weeks or so is washed away and you can begin to start washing normally afterwards :) But you really don't have to do it for longer the first time if you don't want to; just wash normally :)

Aw I wish you the best of luck when you go and visit that girl! I'm sure she'll love having you there :) Remember to take a small bag with you that has body wash, a wash cloth, moisturiser(only if your skin is prone to dryness), deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc. so you can stay clean for the week :)

This is what the bag would look similar to;

Fresh air smell totally works for me! I'll see if I can find deodorants like that. Also thanks for your luck wishes; I'll need it. I too hopes she enjoys my company too.

As for the scents, I dislike flowery/fruity smells yeah (chick in my 9th grade year kept spraying me with her vanilla scented deodorant cuz she thought I smelled so I'd try to get as sweaty/dirty as possible after that which would lead to me getting forced to bath by babysitter that would come by after school :( . Chick stopped eventually tho), but I also dislike AXE and those other 'men scented' products. I don't know why, but I prefer the smell of my own odor to artificial ones.

I'll follow your wash longer tip the night before I fly out to see girl (not really a fan of washing so less time I spend in shower, happier I am). Thanks for the explanation though

As for your babysing me, not at all. I asked you for advice and you have been friendly enough to give it. The more advice the better honestly; it could very well save me a lot of humiliation. The picture of the bag helps too; generally I don't rlly shower/bathe at sleepovers which doesn't really seem like a good thing at this age hahaha so knowing what to bring is useful.

Shave ur underarms wash them each time u wash ur face

Trim ur pubes

Clothes absorb sweat and when bacteria grow they smell..
Therefore minimize your clothing ..when at home take ur shirt + vest off...If ur alone/just close freinds take ur pants off and limit urself to ur undies.

Wear briefs, they let sweat evaporate more

Woo! :) I think unscented body wash may be a little hard to find because I just did a google search and I couldn't find many brands which sell them, but there are loads of very light scented body washes which just don't really smell of anything, so you could probably buy one of those :)

Instead of a shower, you could also take a 15-20 minute soapy bath before you fly out if that's what you prefer.

Jeez that girl was quite rude to have sprayed you with vanilla fragrance.

Awe :) I'm glad to have helped and I hope you have a great time out there :)

I'm going for unscented soap; body wash isn't my thing plus I'm bad at rationing out how much liquid stuff I use. However good to know there's very light scented body washes; can always buy those while at girl's.

Soapy bath I'm not rlly a fan of cuz a. hard to find soap that doesn't give you a fragrance when u exit the bath
b. feel way too clean after I exit it.
So might skip that tip, we'll see. Maybe before I fly off I'll do it or my preferences will change.

Yes. Finally someone that understands how annoying that girl was. She basically told me to jump in front of a tram and I sprayed her with Axe once (terrible stuff) cuz she kept spraying me with vanilla. We never really got along hahahaha. Still I don't hate her; we had a tame dislike of one another.

Let me know if I can ever help you then to reciprocate, BTW. I'm asking people for some advice so I can ahve a good time with girl cuz never rlly slept over with them. I've done it only with guys, which resulted in: video games, play fights and fighting for who would have to take the bath first if we had to take one (no1 wanted to win that one hahaha :) ) and I don't think those things apply for sleepovers with girls

Can I just say now, my mum used to help me shower until I was about year 3 (That's about 8 years old i think), and they still didn't like me showering on my own because I used to always leave soap everywhere on myself, so pffft, if you take a bit longer to get independent, who gives a crap. People used to make funny of me for calling my mum mummy but anyway, tangents.

I haven't read what everyone else has said, so sorry if I'm repeating, but it really depends on how your body works. It's expected though, that you take at least one shower a day, and depending on what you do in the day, possibly even two (or more, but idk). For example, if you go exercising in the morning, you might want to take a shower after exercising and when you get back home at night.

Usually, as a shower routine, you should wash your hair (and depending on how gross your hair gets, once a day to once every two to three days. You can normally judge by how greasy it gets...Or if it's got literal dirt in there) and scrub yourself down with a shower gel or bar of soap. You want to make sure you clean places which get sweaty especially, like your under arms, neck, your groin, etc. Using a loofah or a cloth might help too.

If you take morning showers, after your shower, depending on if you use sprays or roll-on's (or other deodorants I have not heard of), for sprays, I usually just spray it in areas which get sweaty, and for roll ons, under arms. Depending on what I do, I might put both on or just roll on, depends.

NOW TWO THINGS.
1. PUT IT ON BEFORE YOU GO OUT. Deodorant is supposed to stop you from sweating, so don't go putting it on mid way through the day because it's not going to work
2. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BODY SPRAY AND DEODORANT. Body Spray makes you smell nice, like canned perfume/cologne, deodorant does the above^ so don't expect body spray to stop you sweating because it won't.

Lastly, just in case, idk, but make sure you change your clothes regularly. Underwear-> 1 day, socks-> 1 day, Shirts-> 1 (or maybe 2) day, Shorts/Jeans/Bottoms-> max 3-4 days (Depends on what you did)
You normally just have to judge what you did on the day to determine whether or not you clean yourself more or less. Just message me again if you need more help :D

Makes sense; thanks for the advice. Didn't know that part about the neck or clothes so nice to know (Ik the underwear/socks part, dw). Thread's generally made for how to wash the necessary places, not when/what to wash but your advice is pretty relevant for preventing BO :)

As for the mom thing; my mom/sitter (nothing inappropriate) washed me til I was 9 or ten cuz I couldn't wash properly (led to a lot of problems about me smelling at overnight school camps and when returning home). So nice to know I'm not the only one late on the self washing spectrum.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I've also heard of something called 'deodorant wipes' from an IRL friend; anyone know what those are/how they work? Can you just dab them on during the day or what?

You got some good advice here. Loofah's work best. Ours looks more like a weird sponge, but any kind works. Wash your pits with it and bar soap, and wash them twice. Wash real good behind your balls. And anywhere that doesn't get much air circulation.

If you have lots of body hair, trim it. Esp pit hair. (I don't have much, but I know hair holds onto the odor.)

Wear light clothes, maybe stuff that wicks and breathes. In the summer I wear mostly polyesters, some wool, cause they breathe. Cotton holds your sweat and so it smells.

Ah, didn't know wool/polyester breathed, I'll try them. White shirts also seem to help me with that, so I've started wearing white. I'll try trimming if I ever figure out how to shave without failing hahaha :) )
Also thanks for your other tips. I'll try em :)
Mom and dance partner haven't complained that I smell lately so I have hope
