Why are they being mean?

So my best friend (she's 15 like me) is always around guys that are 13/14, they're really immature.
And they're friendly, they tease her non stop but sometimes they're being terribly mean
She's super pretty, and they call her ugly. They call her fat (she's bigger tho but not fat all at) they say she's dumb (and she's not) They say she's a tomboy.
But at the same time she thinks they are her friends, and they consider her a friend I think too.
So why do they seem to like her? And always make physical contact and insult her and be mean too?
Like she's sooo pretty and they call her ugly.

I tease around like that with some of my friends too. It's not a mean thing, it's just how some types of friends show they care. Or they could be flirting, who knows? But they aren't doing this to hurt your friend.

It's sarcasm, humans love it, and it enriches and weaves humor into what would be a mundane conversation.

It also tells the people involved, that they're close enough to communicate on level 2, rather than just level 1 which is just pure face to face communication.

However those who communicate with sarcasm a lot need to also instinctively know how far to push those sarcastic comments.

There are limitations where even if you claim "sarcasm" you said something verbally that crossed a line.

Obviously this girl isn't at that point yet.
