View Full Version : Discovering Music

I've always had a hard time finding my place in the world of music. I don't like any one genre like most people do and it's always hard for me to find songs I like. I've recently been really into EDM/Dubsteppy/Song-Writer music(Like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF0rsRLYkxc) or this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8X9_MgEdCg)).
So, here's the question: How do you discover music that you like?
Also, if you have any suggestions for me that are kind of like the type of music mentioned above, I'd love to hear them.

YouTube suggestions!
Really. Liking a music video? Look at the suggestions and try someone new out! No good new suggestions? Try a listening to another couple of songs and looking at their suggestions. If you keep at it, your YouTube recommendations will also be filled with new music to try out!
Listening to other music videos released by a label are a great idea! EDM/Dubstep-wise, Monstercat comes to mind. Also in the EDM/Dubstep universe there are LOADS of mixes for your favorite genre. Give those a listen and pickup the names of the tracks in the mixes that most caught your attention and also their artists names.
While mostly listening to Metal, I sometimes catch myself listening to Glitch Hop/Moombahcore/Dubstep. I only know the basics like KOAN Sound or Varien.

100% of my music is discovered through Spotify. I just create a radio station from a band I like and I get a bunch of suggestions from other artists that make similar music. Literally could not live without this app.

Honestly this.
But I love all kinds of music, so finding stuff I like isn't hard, been on a bit of a metal spree lately though. :P

Youtube and their suggestion videos. Their video songs aren't mostly what I like to hear but it works 50/50.
EDIT: OR you can try the radio stations. I hear good songs there, depending on what radio you're listening to.
Radios are the old fashioned way and still the best way for me(thought I hardly use it, but bring the best results for me). The randomness is amazing, when you don't know what song's next and it's thrilling you what kind of song it's going to be.

Spotify. I usually search playlists of music I'm interested in created by others and get my songs from them.

I find a lot of music through Spotify, but sometimes I hear new things I like on the radio. My friends and I are always turning each other on to new music as well.

I follow a lot of musical publications (Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, Drowned in Sound) that review music. I also have a clear vision of what I'm interested in listening to, based on their descriptions, so I just listen to some stuff and see if I like it.
Then, I use this website called last.fm (my profile is on my signature), where I keep track of what I listen to. Then, based on what that, I get suggestions. Sometimes they are really good!
Last but not least, I go to a lot of music festivals, where I see a lot of stuff I already liked and discover other artists!

It takes hard work, but when you do what you love, it's no chore! Do you have a last.fm profile?

i typically find similar artists to the genre i'm liking at the moment on spotify.
type in an artist you like in spotify and check out the recommended artists! i also like using spotify radio or pandora, where you create a radio station and they play a bunch of songs catered to your likings. it's awesome. c:

Pretty much when on youtube, there are videos of other bands that are similar to the one I was just listening. So I would click on a song an next thing I know, I sold my soul.

How I discover my favorite genres or singers/bands is usually through Pandora. You can create a station like a band/singer or genre, for example:Taylor Swift Radio or Dubstep Radio. They have a nice feature where you can thumbs up or thumbs down the song and they will tune your station based on your likes and dislikes. They also have a good feature where you can turn a dial and it plays more of your liked artists on the station or you can turn the dial to add more variety in the music. The cons of Pandora are the almost constant and annoying adds that pop up almost always after each song and that you can only skip a small number of songs each hour.My other favorite way to discover music I like is on the local FM radio which I use most often.I love the thrill of not knowing what they'll play next and that they play almost all my favorite songs.

As a pro wrestling fan, I find a lot of music through WWE's theme songs etc. For example, Nickelback, who are now my favourite band, sung the 2010-2012 theme song for Raw as well as the 2014 Survivor Series theme song. Also, Chris Jericho (former WWE superstar) is the lead singer of Fozzy who are now my second favourite band. If you're looking for suggestions, then those two bands are brilliant.

Spotify is what really helped me begin my discovery of different music genres but before that, just random stuff on the internet lol

I discover most of the music I listen to through the internet. YouTube suggestions, on my tumbor dashboard, et cetera. Otherwise, I listen to things people suggest to me or songs people play on speakers or whatever else.

With the internet, you can find A LOT of resources. One place to start is Last.fm. Make a profile, get the scrobbler, look at the recommendations it gives you. Really great tool. There's also Rate Your Music, which is great if you're looking for more specific tags. You can also start looking at publications/blogs like Consequence of Sound or Pitchfork.
There's also a lot of smaller blogs out there like MetalSucks and even larger sites like ProgArchives that have huge lists of things that most people aren't able to go through. ProgArchives alone has so many different categories for the different styles of progressive music that it's amazing. Same thing with JazzArchives and MetalArchives.
Of course, streaming apps like Spotify or Pandora are great tools as well, especially if you're more into streaming music than storing it on a hard drive.

Spotify and Lastfm are essential to my music needs. I have a whole bunch of songs scrobbled to my Lastfm account which is then used to give you recommendations based on what you've listened to. It's real useful to discover more artists in a genre you enjoy. I also tend to watch out for any collaborations an artist I like has done and if it's any good I'll check out the other collaborator.
