I've been doing archery on my school team for 3 years now, and I can, without a doubt, say it is the greatest sport I've participated in(of course, the only other sport I played on a team was basketball, but hey). My school's team is part of the NASP Archery Program(National Archery in the Schools), and our team will be competing in the United States National competition on May 7th(only three weeks!). I've been to the nationals competition the past two years I've done archery, and it's fantastic. Anyhow, I have just recently delved into the world of hunting compound bows. I bought one off craigslist about a week ago and it's been a pretty good start, but I'm definitely still learning the ropes to hunting archery. I was wondering are there any VT users who are into this wonderful sport? If you're not into archery, but it sounds interesting to you, I would love to introduce some of you to it so feel free to discuss anything archery related in general in this thread.

I would love to learn how to do it,I was going to do it through 4-H but couldn't pay for a $300 bow and $10 per arrow.I have pretty strong arms to be able to do it.I just need to find an inexpensive, well built and easy for beginners brand of bow to start with and quality arrows for a reasonable price.Which brand would be best to fit my needs and skill level? Any tips on how to fire it since I have no experience with bows?

I have always wanted to get into it, but never actually pursued the goal. It seems like such a fun activity...

I have done archery for about 3 year but i use a recurve bow. I'm accurate from about 200 yards, never done hunting archery though don't have much experience in compound bows either lol

I've done it very little, my father & grandfather both competed on a national level but well it's not a cheap sport if you have to buy stuff yourself + need a place to practice ohh yeah and the weather is very lame here most of the year and indoor practice is nearly impossible.

I'd like to do it again though if I get the chance.

I always thought archery looked cool to do. Not even sure how to start that, nobody I know does it. Good luck Dan at nationals competition!!!

Look up the genesis original. It's made for kids and teens who want to get into archery. It's what we use in tournament but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for shooting for fun. Perhaps buying a nice recurve would be your best starting point. Also, to learn how to shoot I'd recommend checking out some YouTube videos on the subject.

Oh absolutely. It's a great sport in my opinion.

That's so awesome. I've been thinking about buying a recurve since Christmas but 200 yds is way farther than we shoot in tournament. That's really cool.

Thanks, Keegan! =)

archery is a good sport especially for hunting cause you are more likely to get more kills than a gun cause a gun will scare close animals away

Absolutely! It is also much more fun in my opinion to hunt with a bow. I've never done it myself, but I'd like to one day. It seems more natural and takes a bit more skill perhaps.

I've shot a compound bow a few times. Just for fun.

I'd love to shoot a recurve bow though, that would be so epic. Archery is an amazing skill that I hope never dies out.

search youtube for the "backyardbowyer" and other guys vids showing you how to make your own bow, etc. He uses PVC pipe, which is cheap. You'll LOVE learning to do that stuff and you can sell your products to your buddies, too. :-) Also search for vids about using a slingshot as a bow. In particular, Dave Canterbury's vids about that. He has literally 1000 vids about survival stuff. He was one of the original 2 guys on Dual Survival. His store is 3x as expensive as other places, if you'll google for stuff, try Amazon first.

Also search youtube for the "slingshot channel" Jason Sprague is a genius and quite strong, too.

Another person on youtube to check out if you are interested in compound bows and hunting with a bow would be Jim Burnworth. While I don't really like his television shows "Western Extreme" and "Choose Your Weapon" because I disagree with a lot of his weapon choices for hunting, he does do a pretty good job explaining the basics of bow hunting.

Howard Hill's feats with a bow are on Youtube, and so is some modern guy's rapidfiring and hitting moving targets, from horseback! His name is Hans and he's from Hungary, IIRC
