i was in the same situation except my best friend was straight. i told him how i felt and asked if he felt the same way, he did not, but he respected me for talking to him about it and my feelings towards him. it made our friendship much stronger.

Yes i guess me and my best friend were in an awkward situation for a while because I had a crush on him and he was straight and didn't know about my feelings. But things got better when I confessed about liking him and asking him quite specifically if he wasn't gay. That brought a new level of openness into our friendship and helped to make the bond stronger.
