When will they understand that that the society they live in rests on those Tridents,on those Armed Forces that they despise so much ?
It's not about being agressive,it's about keeping the true agressive ones out and by looking at military spending around the planet, pretty much everyone else besides Europeans are acting agressive.
If they think that the world would be a safer place without the nuclear deterrent...... damn they are so wrong.
If they want money for NHS or whatever, they should cut foreign aid for exemple.

Oddly I agree with you here. For example the U.S. and Russia. We honestly would have started a war with each other right now were it not for the threat of it becoming nuclear

For Europe, emphasising military force just isn't a sustainable plan of action heading into the future. We are an ageing population, the median age is expected to be >50 by 2050, and that population's falling besides. In terms of our defence, we have two options. Push for one last great huzzah: build up our military, flex a bit of that hard power, and maybe project ourselves into some of the more damaged regions ala America, and then hope our new masters are benevolent as we enter decline. Or, divert resources to creating stable, economics-based partnerships with our neighbours (EuroMed Project, Eastern Partnership Project), and let our partners form an effective buffer for us.
I'm voting the latter.

It will probably take an attack on the (Western) European heartland before wide-scale acceptance of force is seen again. One of the most pervasive aspects of post-War European culture, is the grand aversion to violence, and emphasis on politico-legal mechanisms like international law. Just look at the protests that took place across Europe when the US decided to invade Iraq, it's one of our most defining values.

I don't think it is about the world being a safer place. But rather the idea of a nuclear holocaust from an exchange between nuclear powers and the increased amount of warfare that might happen if nuclear weapons were removed, is incommensurable: if the former happens, then it just doesn't matter how many lives might have been saved leading up to it.

I also scoffed at the idea of the US engaging in a unilateral (and it would be unilateral) invasion of Russia.
