So, for the purpose for this thread;
Wig: typically hair that is put over the person's own hair/wig cap and can quickly be removed
Weave: hair that is sewn/glued into the person's hair using a needle
Relaxer: a lotion that is combed into the person's real curly hair. the hair is then washed and the lotion makes the hair straight. the process is repeated once every two-three months.
Recently, I've noticed that pretty much every time I see a picture of a black woman with straight hair on instagram (or any social media sites), a few of the comments are ''ew weave'' ''yuck weave'' ''fake hair'' etc. yet they don't even know if the person in the picture is wearing a weave or not. On twitter, there are plenty of posts directed at black women that say things like ''black women have gross weaves'' ''black girls probably don't have any hair under their weave'' etc.
I don't understand why some people have assumed that weaves are dirty/ghetto. People always confuse wigs for weaves, but even so, wigs and weaves are nothing to be ashamed of because both of them are ways of maintaining hair. People also think that relaxed hair is the same as a weave, thus calling out pretty much any black woman on social media for wearing a weave, when they're not.
Another misconception is that only black girls/women wear weaves. To my knowledge, people of all races can wear wigs or weaves or extensions; it's not exclusive to one race. Yes, black women are usually not born with long straight hair (therefore some people would assume that it's not their real hair) however it is completely unnecessary to call their hair filthy or anything to that effect. Whenever I see a white person with tiny ringlet curls I never assume that their hair is fake and dirty or anything like that.
Alot of weaves aren't even straight; they can be really curly.
I have relaxed hair, yet people always assume that I'm wearing a weave and that I have fake hair. I don't have any issues with people being curious about different types of hair; what I have issues with is the fact that some people take it upon themselves to criticise certain black women with straight hair just because of their stupid assumptions.
Anyway, my question is; why have some people recently started to think that weaves are dirty or bad? A few years ago, most of the people I talked to didn't even know what a weave was.
