A guy asked me to be his date to prom as friends. How do I keep it non-awkward?

If he is asking to go as friends, then it's "non-awkward" to begin with. There are really no romantic expectations on his part.
If you're looking for a romantic date, then either explain that to him or politely decline (or both). If not, then go with him (or someone else, or by yourself) and have a good time. :)

^ exactly. if you are just friends, have dinner, have fun dancing and at the end of the night say it was a fun/great night.

But what do we do during the slow songs? I'm more worried about the environment being awkward than the two of us being awkward.

dance slowly. you can agree on some of this stuff before hand, but honestly, you don't have to make anything out of any of this. just keep the hands appropriate, but there is nothing wrong with doing the slow dances

It's not mandatory to even dance to every song. Only do what you are comfortable with.

I went to prom with one of my best female friends. We danced, slow danced, did all of the posed pictures and whatnot, the works. It was probably less awkward if anything because we were good friends and were more comfortable doing that with each other than with people we didn't know very well.

If you're really good friends with him it shouldn't be awkward at all. I'm going to prom with my best friend I already know it won't be awkward. If you know him well enough and know what he wants to do and what he doesn't want to do then you should be fine
