Today, people of Crimea in Sevastopol celebrate the one year anniversary of their reunification with Russia this week. Last year, the people of Crimea voted 96.8 percent in favor of leaving Ukraine and joining Russia with 83.1 percent of voters turning out. I hailed this as a victory at the time saying it would prevent the kind of ethnic cleansing in Crimea that was carried out under the U.S. backed Croatian government in Yugoslavia when it took power. Croatian ethnic cleansing was carried out against Serbs with U.S. backing. Ukraine has now done the same to Russians also with U.S. backing. At the time, the writing was on the wall with the ultra-nationalist coup government the U.S. government brought to power in Kiev in February 2014.
Rejoining Russia did save the Russian speaking population the ethnic cleansing, murderous repression, and civil war that the Russian speaking population have now suffered elsewhere in Ukraine. The unconstitutional Ukrainian government has even formed a National Guard that includes open Nazi units that see the Russian speaking population as their new Jew. Also in Ukraine, the Communist Party and Barotba have been banned and members have been murdered with impunity.
Fake Trotskyists like David Walters, a founding member of Socialist Organizer, wrongly sided with Obama and U.S. / EU imperialism by calling what happened in Crimea a "land grab" by Russia. Legitimate Leninists-Trotskyists like myself of the Revolutionary Tendency, supported self-determination for the oppressed Russian speaking people of Crimea. This meant supporting their right to rejoin Russia. The following are articles I wrote at the time supporting Crimea's right to reunify with Russia.
