Hi! I was wondering if music can change your personality...:confused:

Do you guys think music such us heavy metal or rap can make a person more violent, furious...? :metal:
Listening to relaxing music make a person be easygoing, calm?

Thanks :)

*I've noticed there's a grammatical mistake in the title, sorry! It'd be "Can music become a bad thing?"

I think music can influence you but only slightly
I listen to metal many but I don't think it makes me violent or depressed. I find it has more meaning to lyrics and I can relate to it.

I think it influences your mood not personality

music can't make you violent. it would be like saying pop music makes you stupid because it is repetitive and lyrics are poorly written. Heavy doesn't cause violence. yea there may be a few people who listen to metal or hip hop who are violent but they were that way before the music, not because of the music.

I agree with this. Except, the rare cases for those who lack empathy or don't understand the lyrics.

I would agree with this. music can heavily influence the mood you are in, but it is not going to change who you are as a person (I guess unless you heard a song which truly changes your life)

I personally think music can not influence who you are and for me, personally, it does not affect my mood either. I listen to different types of music depending on my mood but it never changes it directly.

No music can cause people to act violent or in anyway differently, it's the same as saying violent video games cause young people to go out and murder people. While it is true some people appear to be affected in some way, it is usually due to an underlying issue already present - not due to music or a video game.

I don't think music can really do that. Mood, yes, but not your personality, like the others said.

I do not think it can change a personality but music can make us aware or issues and that can change how we think or feel about things. Many songs do document events or happenings in our world.

I think that music can do a lot to change your personality actually. Not necessarily in the way that you mentioned seeing as how I know some pretty neurotic and wired people who listen to exclusively classical and free jazz and some of the chillest people I know listen to metal, punk, or harsh noise.
However, music can change your worldview and that shapes your personality. If you listen to a lot of dancey pop songs, where the only subjects are typically love, money/riches/success, and parties, then you begin to see those things as what are most important in life. You begin to see the best, "most successful" songs as the ones that sell the best. You often will look at artists for how attractive they are and their image rather than the music. And you'll value, not raw talent or complexity but catchiness, simplicity, and ease. These values and preferences will certainly carry over into other areas of your life.
Now say you only listen to math metal - that's all - then you would tend to value instrumental complexity and displays of complexity while undermining lyrics, vocals and image. Math metal is a much more artisan style of music, very working class.
Now, these ways that they shape your worldview will influence your actions in every day life and therefore, your personality. Especially if they have a "scene" associated with them like punk, metal, and rockabilly. You tend to dress, act, and associate with other people who dress, act, and believe similar social and political beliefs. Shaping your personality even more. We are the sum of our experiences. The more you experience, the more you are shaped.

tl;dr You're not gonna get violent from listening to metal. But your personality is still malleable and music is a big influence.

I think it's more of the other way around. Really chill people tend not to like heavier stuff sometimes, whereas upbeat people will usually prefer uptempo music.

It's not ALWAYS this way, but it tends to at least somewhat determine it from what I can tell.

You slate pop music yet on your soundcloud you cover them?

Maybe it's just my experiences then. I've just come to associate classical music and vanilla new age (read: Enya) with more neurotic people and punk/metal/noise fans tend to be very relaxed individuals in my experience.

As for uptempo in EDM and IDM, that's more of a wild card.

I was making an example. I said it would be like saying, not that that is what I think of pop music. I never said I don't listen to pop music. And not all pop music is bad just like not all metal is bad.

I think that music can't change the personality a person who plays a style of music is because he liked that type
For example if you play rock and roll you will be restless

but if you play classical you will be relaxed
